Bell, Winn Native, Dies in B. Rouge Religious services were held in Baton Rouge Thursday for David J. Bell, 65, a former director of the Department of Veterans Affairs, who died at his home at 2 a.m. Wednesday, December 29, 1976. Bell, a cousin of the late Gov. Earl K. Long, was a native of Atlanta in Winn Parish, but had resided in Baton Rouge for many years. The 65 year old Bell left a position with Delta Tank Co. in 1956 to become head of the Veterans Affairs Department. He was retired from the State Department of Labor. Bell was a confidant and personal bodyguard for Gov. Long and accompanied Long on several political campaigns. He is survived by his wife, Mre. Jean Creamer Bell, a former top assistant in the Louisiana Insurance Department and former aide to Sheriff Al Amiss. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Jessie Ferguson Bell of Atlanta; two daughters, Mrs. L. D. Attuso and Ms. Susan Cathryn Bell, both of Baton Rouge; a son, Dr. Ronald A. Bell, New Orleans; and four grandchildren. Services were conducted by the Rev. Henry Pickett. Burial was in Greenoaks Memorial Park. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Nicholson Post 38 of the American Legion, the Amvets, Elks Club Lodge No. 490, of Dallas, Tex., the Baton Rouge Consistory, Hella Shrine Temple of Dallas, and the Baton Rouge Shrine Club. He was a charter member of the Baton Rouge High 12.
