He was the son of William and Elizabeth Portman Bennett, and the descendant of Will Bennett, a founding settler of Jackson and Lincoln Parishes during the 1840s. Mr. Bennett was reared and educated in Jackson Parish. He was employed by Tremont Lumber Company of Eros in 1921 at the age of fifteen. The history of this company could probably be traced by Mr. Bennett's travels. When the site of operation moved to Rochelle, Grant Parish, Louisiana, in 1927, he accompanied it. During 1948, the company relocated at Joyce, Louisiana in Winn Parish. Mr. Bennett completed 47 years of service with Tremont Lumber Company in 1970. Heman Bennett wed Clara Ellen Dunn of Rochelle, Louisiana on September 19, 1933 at Jonesboro, Louisiana. Their children are Bobby W. Bennett of Joyce, Louisiana, Neigal Fran Thomas of Joyce, Louisiana, and Wanda Faye Bennett of Winnfield, Louisiana. The loss of his right arm on March 7, 1941 at the Rochelle Plant of Tremont forced Mr. Bennett to completely rehabilitate his lifestyle. Despite this handicap he continued to be self sufficient and admirably independent. Heman and Clara Bennett have eight grandchildren. They are: Reba Thomas Miller, Steven D. Thomas, Rose Bennett Pye, Bobbie Sue Bennett, Deborah Freeman Thomas, Robert W. Bennett, Rhonda Freeman Scott, and Ronald B. Freeman. Their great grandson is Chris Miller. Mr. Bennett succumbed December 26, 1980, at 2:12 p.m. at Winnfield, Louisiana. We, his family, would like to take this opportunity to express our pride in and our love for this humane and affectionate man.
