All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: February 7, 1941 Winnfield News-American Rites Held For Julian Bernstein In Monroe, Jan. 26 Builder of Much of Local Business Section Dies Funeral services for Julian Bernstein, 73, prominent Winnfield businessman who succumbed January 25, after nine years of invalidism, were conducted in Monroe on Monday, Jan. 27, by Rabbi F. K. Hirsch of Temple B'Nai Israel. The body was interred in the Jewish Cemetery at Monroe. The son and nephew of one of Winnfield's earliest merchants, he became a builder of a large part of Winnfield's business district, Mr. Bernstein's parents were the late Philip and Rosalie Marks Bernstein, and he was the fourth of their eight children, two of whom survive him, Miss Nettie Bernstein of Winnfield and Rudolph Bernstein of Monroe. He was a brother of the late Arnold Bernstein of Monroe and of Henry Bernstein, a prominent attorney at Monroe, also deceased. Julian was born at Montgomery and was educated in the Jackson Boys School at New Orleans. For a while he worked as a cotton sampler in Norton's Cotton Exchange at New Orleans, then came to Winnfield to help his uncle, Morris Bernstein, manage his mercantile business. He later sold insurance and dealt in real estate and oil leases until ill health made him inactive nine years ago. Mr. Bernstein was interested at all times in the community where he lived, and was a constant supporter of public improvements. He supervised and financed the construction of the "Bernstein Block", the buildings on the northern half of Main Street from the old Milam's Style Shop to Morgan and Lindsey's, also the Pineville Gas Co. office, Carpenter's Store, Holder's Caf‚ buildings.
