All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: December 18, 1969 Winn Parish Enterprise & Winnfield News-American Classmate Injured WSHS Senior Killed In One-Car Accident Vicky Lamar Berry, 17, a senior at Winnfield Senior High School, was fatally injured about 2:10 p.m. Friday in a one-car accident on U.S. 84 west of Winnfield, according to State Police. Berry was a passenger in an automobile driven by Jerry L. Key, 17, also a senior at the school, Trooper Marlin Connor reported. Key, charged with negligent homicide, was seriously injured in the crash and taken to Winnfield General Hospital. Berry was the son of Lamar Berry, manager of U. B. Carpenter's Department Store. Key, son of Mrs. Della Bustin, was driving a 1965 Mercury sedan at a speed estimated by Connor at about 90 miles per hour. According to Connor, Key had passed another car and had returned to the right lane when the car hit the end of the Slou Creek Bridge, about 10 miles west of Winnfield. The vehicle traveled more than 200 feet before stopping. Both boys were thrown from the car. The bridge, first bridge west of the Sand Dump Road, had a damaged rail and foundation from the impact, Connor reported. Berry died instantly from head injuries, according to authorities. Vicky was active in school affairs, and had been a member of the 1968 Tiger football team. He served as Beta Club president, was recently elected Future Teachers of America Beau and was a member of the Speech Club and Student Council and was an honor student. He was a delegate to Boy's State, stage director for the senior play and statistician for the football team assisting the Winn Parish Enterprise. He had played both offensive and defensive guard for the Tigers until an injury sidelined him. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Laurel Heights Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. W. F. Harrel. Burial was in Garden of Memories Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Jay and Rocky Berry; a sister, Sherry Berry; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Berry; his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Odis Carroll of Winnfield; and a number of aunts and uncles.
