All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: June 4 & 11, 1931 Winn Parish Enterprise No. 1 Cody Bevill Dies In Car Accident Accident Occurs On Winnfield-Tullos Highway Cody Bevill, nineteen year old son of Mrs. Dora Bevill of Winnfield was instantly killed Thursday afternoon at about 4:30 o'clock, when he was knocked from the side of a truck by a passing car. The accident occurred on the Winnfield-Tullos highway, which is under construction for paving. The truck on which young Bevill was riding was at a narrow part of the road and when a Ford Coupe, driven by Mrs. Howard Drewett, also of Winnfield, attempted to pass, it dragged him to the ground. Another car, driven by W. B. Mucker, of Natchez, Miss., was right behind the Drewett car and was going at such a speed, according to reports, that it was unable stop before running over the body also. The truck on which Cody was riding was driven by Louis Plummer, sixteen year old employee of the Roberts Paving Company. The accident occurred near the Dugdemonia bridge, about four miles east of Winnfield. Bevill was instantly killed, both arms, both legs, were broken, and severe gashes and cuts were about the neck and head. Bevill was a football star of the Crimson Tigers and was captain of his team. He would have graduated from the Winnfield High School next year. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Dora Bevill, two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Prudhomme of Shreveport and Mrs. Mary Ellen Gottschaldt of Mobile, Ala., and one brother, Gordy Bevill of Mobile, Ala. Funeral arrangements had not been made this afternoon. No. 2 Last Rites Held For Cody Bevill Friday Afternoon Tragic Passing of Football Captain Mourned By Entire Town Funeral services for William Cody Bevill, whose untimely death occurred last Thursday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock in an automobile collision on the Winnfield-Tullos highway four miles east of town, were held at the family residence Friday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. The Rev. C. C. Wier, pastor of the Methodist Church, had charge of the services, assisted by the Rev. Cullen, Baptist pastor, and Rev. Stokes, Presbyterian pastor. Interment was in Winnfield Cemetery. Beautiful floral offerings and a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends attested to the popularity of this youth and to the esteem in which he was held. Acting as pallbearers were members of the Football team and his classmates. They were Jack White Capps, Richard Walsh, Robert Turner, John Brewer, Dudley Shell, and Harold Dillard. The deceased was the son of Mrs. William Gordy Bevill and the late Mr. W. G. Bevill. He was born in Winnfield November 30, 1910, being twenty years of age at the time of his death. For the past three years he has been a star player on the Winnfield Crimson Tiger football team and was captain of the team in 1930 and had been reelected captain of the team. He completed his junior term in high school this year and was president of his class. He had been employed by the Roberts Construction Company only about a week before his death occurred. Surviving members of the family are his mother, Mrs. W. G. Bevill of Winnfield; one brother, Gordy, of Mobile, Ala.; two sisters, Mrs. J. F. Prudhomme of Shreveport and Mrs. K. G. Gottschaldt, of Mobile, Ala.; and his grandfather, the Rev. J. W. Vick, of Winnfield, and a host of relatives. The entire community was shocked and grieved at the tragic passing of one of its promising youths and extend sympathy to the bereaved family. Out of town relatives attending the last rites for William Cody Bevill, who was killed in an automobile collision last Thursday afternoon were Mrs. Roy Boyett and son, Harold, of Frankston, Texas, Mrs. Maggie Smith of Frankston, Texas, Mrs. R. F. Sharp and daughter, Verbie, of Jonesboro, La., Mr. and Mrs. Smelly and son of Liberty Hill, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Prudhomme, of Shreveport, Mrs. K. G. Gottschaldt and Gordy Bevill of Mobile, Ala.
