M. Funeral services for Jessie D. Bishop, age 22, who drowned in Grand River 27 miles below Plaquemine on early last Friday morning, were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the New Jerusalem Church. Services were conducted by the Rev. Earnes Evans, assisted by Rev. E. B. Barton and Rev. H. J. Mott, and interment was in the church cemetery. Young Bishop was working in the Bayou Pigeon area with the Marine Exploration Company. Sheriff C. A. Griffon of Iberville Parish, who investigated the accident, reported that Bishop and five other men were in a boat crossing Grand River when it began to sink. While the others jumped to safety Bishop for some reason was unable to leave the boat and it is believed that he was caught in the current and carried down stream. The party of men was returning to camp after the river ferry had tied up for the night, which forced them, according to the reports, to engage a private boat to take them across. About midstream the motor had to be shut off and it was then the boat began to sink and Bishop was unable to reach safety. They body was recovered and transferred to Winnfield to await funeral arrangements. Survivors include his grandmother, Mrs. J. A. Cogley, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse L. Bishop, and one brother, Lee Dell Bishop of Winnfield; also a second brother, Johnny Bishop, and a sister, Mrs. Blanche Evans of Orange, Texas. Pallbearers were men of the local National Guard Unit, of which the deceased was a member.
