All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: July 28, 1966 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Man Dies In Fire; Family Escapes Leslie Blake, 38 year old papermill worker and father of four, burned to death as flames swept through his home near Boyett's Store in Ward 4 early Sunday, July, 24. His wife and two sons escaped. Blake's 18 year old son, Bruce, tried unsuccessfully to drag his father out of the flaming home but was forced away by the fire. The Blake's daughter, Terry, 15, and Patti, 5, were visiting their grandmother at the time of the fire. Mrs. Blake was awakened by the fire roaring through the attic. Cause of the fire was undetermined. Winnfield and Dodson fire departments sent trucks to the scene. Winnfield firemen said the house was engulfed in flame when they arrived after the 19 mile drive. The call was received at 3:47 a.m. Mrs. Blake drove to Herman Boyett's and he called in the alarm. It was the first fire fatality in Winn Parish this year. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 25, in the Yankee Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Edgar Gunter officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors also include his mother, Mrs. W. R. Blake, Ward 4, brother, Robert Blake, Jonesboro, and a sister, Mrs. Willie Emmett, Rt. 1, Goldonna.
