All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: August 27, 1936 Winn Parish Enterprise Former Local Youth Drowns In Dorcheat Talmadge Bradford and 4 Year Old Girl Are Victims Talmadge Bradford, 21, of Minden and former resident of Winnfield, drowned in Dorcheat Bayou, three miles west of Minden last Saturday afternoon. Norma Lee Squires, 4 years old, also of Minden, drowned at the same time. They were on a picnic party. Five others were rescued. The pair drowned when a motor boat in which they were riding filled with water and sank after the motor suddenly stopped and the stern of the craft dropped under the water. Other persons in the boat were Robert Langston, 24, Edith Thompson, 18, Jim Ella Thompson, 10, Grant Squires, 5, and May Kennedy, 16. They were saved. All were from Minden. Immediately after the boat began to sink, all jumped out into the water. One of the small girls, Jim Ella Thompson, grabbed Bradford about the neck and asked him to save her. They pair started for toward the bank. About 15 feet from the shoreline, Bradford sank, but other members of the party rescued the child. Bradford was the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Bradford of Minden. They resided in Winnfield a number of years in the Lee Grigsby house on West Main, and Mr. Bradford was connected with the Louisiana and Arkansas Railway company. Talmage was a student of the Louisiana State Normal College in Natchitoches, La.
