R. Bird, age 93 years, 10 months, and 22 days, a member of an old and prominent Winn Parish family died at her home in Dodson, Saturday, September 14, 1935 after an illness of ten months. "Aunt Sallie" as she was affectionately known by a host of friends and relatives in Winn Parish first saw the light of day in Georgia, having been born on Nov. 22, 1841, and had she lived until this November, 1935, would have attained her 94th birthday. At an early age, "Aunt Sallie" together with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Adam Gaar, came to Winn Parish from Georgia in 1858 and built the Gaar house in Winn Parish at a point near New Hope or Gaar Church. Sarah Ann Gaar being her maiden name. At the Gaar family reunion recently held at New Hope, "Aunt Sallie", the oldest direct living descendant of the pioneer Gaar family, was named honorary president of the reunion organization, which was appropriate. J. A. "Uncle John" Gaar is now the only and oldest surviving member of the family. At an early age in life Mrs. Bird joined the Christian forces and affiliated with the Methodist Protestant Church, and, as long as her health permitted, was an active and loyal member of same. Some time ago she was elected honorary member of the Dodson Methodist Protestant Sunday School. The deceased is survived by a brother, J. A. Gaar, of Dodson; several nieces, and their families, Mrs. Aline Dillon, Dodson; Mr. and Mrs. A. I. Talton and family, Winnfield; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Sholars, Dodson, besides a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.
