All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** SOURCE: Undated 1944 Winnfield newspaper THOMAS BURNETT BURIED AT MINERAL SPRINGS SUNDAY __________________ Thomas Newport Burnett, 67 years and 5 days of age, died Thursday, November 2, at 7:20 p.m. at his home in Gaars Mill, after an illnes confining him to his bed for more than three years. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Friendship church and burial was in the Mineral Springs cemetery. Rev. R oy Grant, of Eros, pastor of the New Hope Methodis church, Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the Winnfield Presbyterian church, and Rev. Lemons, pastor of the Winnfield Nazaren church conducted the services. Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro was in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Burnett was born and reared in Winn parish, where he was one of the outstanding farmers of Faars Mill. For seven years before his illness he was Winn parish agent for the Shreveport Times . He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Of his ten children, he was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Lofton Burnett, who was lost at sea several years ago while serving with the Merchant Marines. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Burnett, of Gaars Mill; six daughters, Mrs. C F Gates of Sikes, Mrs. Lewis Womack of Gaars mill, Mrs Clarence Sutton of Winnfield, Mrs. J L Hebert of Shreveport, Mrs Nettie Branch of Bossier City and Miss Elma Burnett of Pineville; three sons, Rawson Burnett of Gaars Mill, Huey Floyd Burnette of Knoxville, Ten,. and Cpl. James E Burnett of Honolulu; two sisters Ms. W J Thames of Gaars Mill and Mrs Sally Miller of New Orleans; one brother, I I Burnett of Sikes; sixteen grandchildren. Acting pallbearers were Jesse Thames, Arnold Sikes, Willie Frazier, Clayton White,, Marvin Wyatt and Wallace Ingalls, Honorary pallbearers were B W Bailey, A L Ladner, P K Abel, Jim Russell, and J F W alker, all of Winnfield; Ira White, Horace Parker, Ira Gates, Grayson Emmons, Iley Simmons and W.V. Simmons, all of Sikes; PT Dark, Hilton Hammons, Rev R L Hancock, Dayton Hammons, Roy Gaar and A O Robertson all of Gaars Mill -----------------------------*note.....The above was written in the paper as BURNETTE, this was wrong, it should be BURNETT ----- T N Burnett's three youngest children stated adding the extra e I was told that everyone spelled it wrong when my dad went into the service and also that a teacher told them that they should have a e on the end of Burnett Either way they are stuck with the extra e now. This is another good reason to check different spellings of your surname.
