Aged Woman Dead, 3 Hurt in Car Wreck On Sunday Morning

Mrs. Mattie Cooper Slightly Injured in Accident Near Coushatta

Mrs. P. C. Corbitt, 52, who was seriously injured Sunday morning about 10
o'clock in an automobile accident which resulted in the death of her mother,
Mrs. J. M. Burkett, 79, and the injury of two other persons, was reported
resting comfortable at Tri-State Hospital Monday. Mrs. Corbitt suffered
several broken ribs, and cuts and abrasions about the head and body. She also
suffered from shock.

The other two persons injured are P. C. Corbitt, vice president of the
Shreveport Packing Co., who resides on the Mansfield road, and Mrs. Mattie
Cooper, 80, of Winnfield, mother of Mrs. Corbitt, who had been visiting in
Shreveport for several weeks.

At the time of the accident, the four persons were enroute from Shreveport to
Winnfield. Shen Mrs. Corbitt, driver of the heavy sedan, attempted to pass
another car driven by Mrs. Clawson Jones of Red River Parish, also traveling
south, the car skidded and overturned in a shallow ditch. The automobile was
not badly damaged.

The fatal accident occurred directly in front of the home of George Posey.
Mrs. Burkett was extricated from the wrecked automobile and carried into the
Posey home where she died 15 minutes later. Death was attributed to shock.

The three injured persons were rushed to Tri-State hospital here in a Rool
Osburn & Sons ambulance. Mrs. Corbitt was the most seriously injured. After
treatment for slight cuts and abrasions, Mr. Corbitt and Mrs. Cooper were
discharged to their homes.

Witnesses said that when Mrs. Corbitt swung out to pass the other automobile
the left wheels struck the dirt shoulder of the road, softened by heavy rains
of Saturday night, skidded and overturned.

Dr. W. L. Davis of Coushatta was immediately summoned, but Mrs. Burkett was
dead when he arrived. He gave first aid to the injured.
