J. Byrnes, 65, Held On Sunday Edward James Byrnes, 65, prominent retired Winnfield businessman, died Friday, December 21, 1951 in a local hospital of a heart attack suffered Wednesday. Funeral services were held Sunday from the family residence in Winnfield, with Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor of the Winnfield First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Pollock Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers. Pallbearers were J. N. Sowers, A. L. Sikes, Sr., D. C. Warner, Harvey Rhymes, J. L. Beck, C. D. Moss, Howard Tarver, Richard Heard, K. T. Egan, and Everett Burke. Mr. Byrnes, a native of Memphis, Tenn., had been in Winnfield for the past 30 years. He was a charter member of the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings and Loan Association and had been one of the vice-presidents of the organization since its beginning. He was vice-president and founder of Winn Motors, Inc., Ford dealer here, at the time of his death. He started in the Ford business in Winnfield in 1923. Mr. Byrnes was a member of the First Baptist Church an of the local Masonic Lodge. He was also a charter member of the Winnfield Rotary Club. In failing health since the latter part of 1948, he had retired from active business in 1949. He was engaged in the sawmill business in Jena and Womack before coming to Winnfield. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Esilee Byrnes; one son, Robert C., of Winnfield; one daughter, Mrs. Alma Trahan, of Alexandria; one sister, Mrs. L. T. Whitten, of Memphis; and two grandchildren.
