THE WINNFIELD-NEWS AMERICAN Friday, May 27, 1938 Edward Byrnes Is Instantly Killed In Wreck Sunday Accident Occurs One Mile North of Town Early Sunday A. M. Edward Byrnes, age 31, was instantly killed early last Sunday morning when the car he was driving was wrecked turning over several times, about a mile north of town. Young Byrnes was alone at the time, but the physical facts of the wreck indicated that the car left the highway and plunged down an embankment, throwing him clear of the machine with such force that his body was completely shaken up, breaking his two legs and neck. The accident occurred about four o'clock Sunday morning and was discovered soon thereafter by Hayes McDonald of Jonesboro who was enroute to Winnfield to receive flowers off The Hustler, the early morning passenger train which arrive at 4:25. He hurried into town and notified the night marshal, T. J. Dalby, who informed Sheriff Bryant Sholars and Coroner Dr. J. F. Faith. They went immediately to the scene of the accident. Investigtions [sic] made led to the conclusion that Byrnes had momentarily fallen asleep while driving toward town and the car left the road on the curve where the accident occurred, and which was less than 100 yards from the place where George Holmes was killed in a similar mishap about a month ago. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the family residence here with the Rev. Dr. B. C. Land, pastor of the First Baptist church, and the Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment followed in the family plot of the Pollock cemetery which concluding services were attended by a host of friends of the family from Winnfield. The deceased is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Byrnes, one brother, Robert Byrnes and one sister, Mrs. Ben Trahan of Winnfield.
