Calhoun, Wednesday, 4 P. M. Funeral Services Held Thursday Afternoon At Mars Hill Cemetery John L. Calhoun, local insurance man, succumbed to a heart attack Wednesday afternoon about four o'clock at his home here. Despite failing health for the past years his condition was not considered serious until a few hours after a sudden attack Wednesday morning while in town. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at four o'clock at the home conducted by the Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, and interment was in the Mars Hill Cemetery near Montgomery. The deceased was born in Grant Parish, where he owned an operated a plantation until 1913 when he and his family moved to Winnfield. Soon after coming here he became affiliated with the business interest of the town and while his major efforts were managing his insurance affairs he also served as vice- president of the First National Bank. Later he was elected a member of the Board of Alderman of the town and when the 19th Levee Board was organized in 1928 he was appointed to represent Winn Parish on the board. He was commissioned a justice of the peace and notary public. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Susie Calhoun, one son, Lt. Teal C. Calhoun, now with the U. S. armed forces in Ireland, four daughters, Mrs. Paul A. Duke of Colfax, Mrs. C. L. Posey, Mrs. J. D. Nelson and Miss Myrtle Calhoun, all of Jena; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Jackson, Montgomery, Mrs. Emma Dixon, Verda, and Mrs. Olla Mcmanus, Lillie; two brothers, Charlie Calhoun, Montgomery, and J. D. Calhoun, Derry. Pallbearers were John Emerson, H. B. Bozeman, P. Hugh Mercer, A. G. Stewart, Joe P. Durham, and Houston Gates.
