Dr. John R. McElwee, Winn Parish deputy coroner, who made an examination, said he could not determine for certain whether Caldwell's death was due to a coronary or to falling and striking his head on a large post near the body. He therefore sent the body to Alexandria for an autopsy. Caldwell's lifeless body was discovered at about 9:15 p.m. Monday by Willie Odell, a night watchman at the mill. The body was lying behind a debarking machine. Caldwell probably had been dead four or five hours, according to Winn Parish Chief Deputy J. J. Crippen who, with other members of the Sheriff's Department, made an investigation at the scene. He had worked as a clean up or utility man at the sawmill and was supposed to have been off work at 5 p.m. His home was in the L & A Quarters.
