William E. Campbell, 30, a former resident of Sikes community, was killed in the invasion of France according to a telegram to his wife, the former Miss Mae Inez Starnes, of Sikes, who now resides on Route 1, Columbia, La. His death occurred on June 8, the War Department reported. Cpl. Campbell, a paratrooper, had been overseas 10 months. He received his training at Camp Wheeler and Ft. Benning, Ga., and Ft. Bragg, N. C. A native of Georgia, he graduated from the Dallas, Ga. College and taught school before becoming employed as an engineer with the Southern Kraft Paper Mill, Georgetown, S. C. His only survivor is his wife, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Starnes of Columbia, La., until recently residents of Sikes.
