C. Canderday, Jr., Dies As Blowout Causes Accident W. C. Canerday, Jr., 24 years old, of Calvin, was instantly killed and three other Calvin youths were injured when their car plunged over an embankment on Highway 167 two and one-half miles north of Bentley early Sunday morning. State Troopers James Herndon and James Price, after investigating the accident, filed a report early this week stating that the plunge over the embankment was the result of a blowout. Injured were Everett T. Thurmond, 21, who sustained a broken left leg; Ray Hennigan, 22, bruises of the back and shoulders; and John E. Carter, 20, less serious injuries. Thurman and Hennigan are receiving treatment in the Veterans Hospital at Alexandria. Only the driver, James Martin, 21, escaped without injury. All the youths in the wreck except Martin were members of the Calvin softball team. During the first game here Monday night a minute of silence was observed in memory of the deceased. Funeral Held Tuesday Funeral services for W. C. Canerday, Jr., were held Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, of which deceased was a member. The Rev. F. M. York, pastor of the Calvin Baptist Church, officiated, and was assisted by the Rev. G. W. McDaniel. Burial was in the Bethlehem Cemetery. Pallbearers were first cousins of the deceased; Willie Burnum, Merle Bates, Hesley D. Canerday, J. D. Canerday, Rayford Bagwell, and R. C. Carter. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Canderday, Calvin; four brothers, Herman, New Orleans; Sam, of Winnfield; Gerald, of Fort Bliss, Texas; and Bobby Dale of Calvin. W. C. was a graduate of Calvin High School. He was a member of the Armed Forces for more than three years, receiving his discharge last December.
