All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: October 30, 1958 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Winnfield Negro Dies of Gunshot In Jonesboro Nathaniel Johnson, 39 year old Winnfield Negro, is being held in Jackson Parish jail for investigation of a shooting in which Varis Carpnter, 22, another Winnfield Negro, was killed last Saturday night. Jackson Parish Sheriff's authorities said the shooting occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday, in front of a taxi stand in a colored section of Jonesboro. Carpenter was shot in the chest by a single .22 caliber bullet slug. Johnson reportedly told officers the shooting was accidental. He said the gun, a sawed off single shot .22, was in his car and that they were looking at it. Carpenter asked to see the gun and Johnson said he nahded it to Carpenter. He said the gun went off as he handed it over. Carpenter was dead on arrival at a Jonesboro clinic. John was taken into custody about 8:30 p.m. shortly after the shooting. Formal charges have not been filed, pending completion of the investigation by the District Attorney.
