E. Carter Today at 4 P. M. Funeral services for James Edward Carter, 71, who died in a local hospital Monday at 6 p.m. following a long illness, will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock, at the First Baptist Church. Officiating at the services will be Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor, assisted by Rev. Waynon Mott, pastor of the Laurel Heights Baptist Church, Rev. Alwin Stokes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and Rev. H. J. Mott of West Monroe. Interment will be in the Winnfield Cemetery. The son of the late C. C. and Fannie Machen Carter, the deceased was born October 20, 1883 at the family home in what is now known as the Wattsville Community. His father, C. C. Carter, was brought by his parents in 1846 to Winn Parish where the family has lived continuously since, growing into one of the most prominent family groups in this area. Jim Carter, as he was best known over the parish, grew up on the farm, attended the public schools of his time and later attended Soule College in New Orleans. He was employed in a general store in Calvin for several years and became affiliated with the civic and political life of his community, and was elected police juror from Ward 8. He came to Winnfield in 1909 and was associated in the mercantile business with the late Frank L. Shaw in the Shaw-Carter Company. Later he organized the Carter Motor Company which he actively managed until 1936 when he sold it and entered the real estate business in which he was engaged until his last illness. His extra business activity included serving as president of the Bank of Winnfield & Trust Company, and for many years prior to his presidency and until his death he was a member of the board of directors of the bank. He held membership in the Eastern Star Lodge No. 151 F. & A. M., Chapter No. 59 R. A. M., Scottish Rite, and Winnfield Commandery Knights Templar. Survivors are three brothers, Chas. M. Carter, Jonesboro, L. C. Carter and E. D. Carter, Winnfield; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Lowe, Verda, Mrs. S. C. Jackson and Mrs. Virgil Williams, Winnfield, and 57 nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers include eight nephews: C. C. Carter, J. C. Jackson, W. S. Carter, Jr., Don L. Carter, Leon Lowe, Gerald Carter, Ira Key, and R. B. Carter. Named honorary pallbearers are: J. R.
