All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: May 28, 1970 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American 18 Year Old Killed; One Dead, Seven Hurt In Crash Early Saturday An 18 year old Winnfield girl was killed and seven others injured in a one-car accident about 4:20 a.m. Saturday on La. 34 in Grant Parish near the Winn Parish line, according to state police. Police identified the girl as Dorothy Ann Carter. Listed as injured seriously and transferred from Winnfield General Hospital to Huey P. Long Hospital in Pineville was James L. Howard, 18. Also injured in the accident and transferred to the Pineville hospital were Terry Lee Brown, 22, and Harlon C. Paul, 16. All were identified as Negroes from Winnfield. Also injured was Arthur Lee Carter, 21, driver of the car, according to state police, and husband of the fatally injured girl. Carter was treated at Winnfield General and released. Others listed as suffering minor injuries in the wreck were Lizzive Brown, 26; Walter Ray Glenn, 24; and Joe L. Bedford, 18. They also gave addresses as Winnfield. According to state police, Arthur Lee Carter apparently lost control of the vehicle as he was driving north on La. 34 about 2.1 miles north of the intersection with U. S. 71 about one mile south of Winn Parish. Troopers said the car went onto the right shoulder of the road, returned to the road skidding sideways, and then went back off the road to the right hitting an embankment. The report by state police stated the car turned around at least one time coming to a stop facing south. About 500 feet of skid marks were left by the vehicle, according to state police. The driver and the fatally injured girl were ejected from the vehicle, the report stated. Careless and reckless driving and other charges are pending against Arthur Carter. Police quoted Carter as saying the car is owned by James Carter of Winnfield. Although the accident reportedly occurred at about 4:20 a.m. Saturday, police were not notifed until about 7 a.m. Services for Dorothy Ann Carter are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Morning Star Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Summerfield, La. cemetery under the direction of Ben Johnson Funeral Home. Survivors include her husband; two sisters, Ella Mae Robinson, Winnfield, and Lola B. Foster, Marble Falls, Texas; seven brothers, Obbie Lee, Robert Louis, and Elize Williams, all of Winnfield; and Audie Ray, Jesse, Gary, and Berry Williams, Jr., all of Marble Falls, Texas; and her parents, Berry Williams, Richland, Washington, and Mrs. Idell Hill, Marble Falls.
