All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: November 1, 1951 Winn Parish Enterprise Marshal Gamble Carter Dies Of Heart Attack Gamble Carter, 52, Winnfield town marshal and fire chief, died suddenly of a heart attack about 2 p.m. Wednesday, while working in the Winnfield Cemetery. Cemetery cleanup day had been proclaimed by the Mayor, and Marshal Carter was one of several hundred people working cleaning off the cemetery. He was fatally stricken while mowing grass, and was pronounced dead a few minutes later by Dr. John T. Mosley, who was summoned from Winnfield General Hospital. Mr. Carter had been fire chief in Winnfield for the past 13 years and had been in the marshal's office for the past 10 years. He served as deputy marshal and fire chief previous to being appointed marshal in 1948. He was elected marshal in April 1950. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hallie Bowen Carter; one son, Gerald, a student at Northwestern State College; five brothers, J. E., Leon, E. D., all of Winnfield, W. S. Of Calvin, and C. M. Of Jonesboro; three sisters, Mrs. S. C. Jackson and Mrs. Virgil Williams of Winnfield, and Mrs. Dan Lowe of Verda. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. this afternoon, Thursday, in the First Baptist Church, Winnfield. Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor, officiated with burial in the Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers. Pallbearers were Johnnie Wroten, Louis Sholars, Joe Emerson, Bill Holstead, Emmett Cope, Clyde Taylor, Louis Jenkins, and Douglas Durrett. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Winnfield police force, Mary D. C. Allen, Eli Harrell, Jeff Thomas, J. R. Madden, H. A. Richardson, Troy Smith, and members of the Sigma Tau fraternity at Northwestern State College.
