Carter, 74, native of the Calvin Community, and a resident of Jonesboro for the past 20 years, died in a Jonesboro hospital Sunday night following an illness of about five days. He had served in numerous civic capacities and had been president of the Winn Parish Police Jury and also president of the Jackson Parish Police Jury during his lifetime. A retired bus driver, Mr. Carter was a member of the Jonesboro Masonic Lodge and was a deacon in the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Jonesboro Church with the Rev. J. W. Buckner, pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Crossett, Ark., and the Rev. E. L. Wiggins, pastor of Highland Baptist Church in Monroe, officiating. Burial was in the Garden of Memories in Jonesboro under direction of Southern Funeral home. Acting as pallbearers were V. G. Carter, C. C. Carter, Wesley Carter, W. S. Carter, Dale Carter, Curtis Key, J. C. Jackson, and Leon Lowe. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mamie Blake Carter of Jonesboro; a daughter, Mrs. Lavell Salley, a son, Don L. Carter, both of Monroe; a brother, Leon Carter of Winnfield; three sisters, Mrs. Sam Jackson and Mrs. Virgil Williams, both of Winnfield and Mrs. Minnie Lowe of Verda; and four grandchildren.
