On the 12th day of July, 1910, the Death Angel visited the quiet village of Calvin and took from us one of our loving mothers, Fannie Carter, wife of C.C. Carter, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Machen. Several years ago she gave her heart to God and has been a faithful worker. She loved to serve her Master and was always about her Father's business. She always the same, always scattering sunshine everywhere till she was taken from us to the land beyond. Her influence for good was great and will never be forgotten. She made a host of friends wherever she went and was truly the sunshine of her home. Today her sweet spirit is shining in the Master's Kingdom but in her home she will be missed most. After living fifty-four happy years and bringing gladness and sunshine into her home 'tis here the sorrow and loneliness is keenest; here she will be missed most. We know not why God takes from us the one we cherish but the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. He gave her like a ray of sunshine but has taken her to shine with Him in glory. He sent His angel to earth's garden and took her, one of its sweetest flowers to boom in the garden of eternity. Think of this, then, dear bereaved ones, "she can not come back to us but we can go to her." Heaven indeed must be sweeter now since she is there and where our treasure is there will our hearts be also. My prayer is that the remembrance of this beautiful life will be a sweet lesson to us who are left behind to be ready when God calls us home. Her niece, E.C.*********************** OBIT #2 SOURCE: The Comrade, Winnfield, LA, Friday, 12 August 1910 Asleep in Jesus. On July 12, 1910, at her home near Calvin, La., Mrs. Fannie Carter fell asleep in death. As she said, Jesus saw fit to take her home to rest. She suffered so much, but she bore her suffering with the utmost patience. She was a loving and affectionate mother and companion. She leaves a husband and eleven dear children and aged mother and father and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her loss. She joined the Missionary Baptist Church when young and lived a true Christian, as near as she knew how. She lived 53 years, 9 months, 7 days, a quiet and happy life. Oh how she will be missed at home and everywhere we go, but weep not dear children, for we feel that our loss is heaven's gain. In her dying words she called for her boys and they went to her and said "Mama, what do you want?" and she said, "I am going to leave you, and I want you all to be good boys and meet me," and she clasped her hands heavenward. It is not all of life to live nor all of death to die. She was loved by every one that met her and tried to make them happy. She was good to the sick and thought it her duty to wait on the sick and as long as she was able she visited the sick and tried to cheer them. The Lord never puts any more on his children than they can bear; If they will trust him along the path my feet have trod, Oh Lord, help me this sin to shun; The sin is Satan's snare. Young men and boys, I'll warn you; now is the time you must take heed and never stray from mother's ways. The sin may stand on every hand to draw you to its shame. Boys, lean your head and heart and hand towards a better land. Oh boys, your heart is tender, now is the time to think and never come to sin. There are many boys who never stop to think of mother's care; they grieve her heart and bring her sadness. A TRUE FRIEND.
