Cookston, 64, Dies At Home Here Tuesday Morning William Cavitt Cookston, 64, who died Tuesday morning at 7:30 o'clock at his home in Winnfield, was buried in the local cemetery Wednesday afternoon, following funeral services at the Methodist Church, at 3 o'clock. Rev. Alwin Stokes, Rev. Harvey B. Hysell, and Rev. H. H. McBride, pastors of Winnfield, conducted the services. Pallbearers were J. E. Carter, Dr. F. C. Wren, Douglas L. Durrett, S. E. Jenkins, Bryant Sholars, Hasson Morris, Steve Watley, and W. F. DeBusk. Mr. Cookston became a member of he Winn Parish Selective Service Board in August, 1940, soon after the selective service board was inaugurated. A few months later he was elected chairman and headed the board until his resignation, because of ill health, April 6, 1943. On November 15, 1943, Mr. Cookston accepted appointment as police juror of Ward One, Winn Parish, by Governor Sam Jones, and was active in affairs of the parish several months prior to his death. He also served as Colonel on Governor Jones' staff and as a member of the Winn Parish Democratic Committee. Besides his state and community interests in Winn Parish, Mr. Cookston was a prominent surveyor and timberman. He was born and educated in Arkansas and moved to Winnfield thirty years ago. In 1918 he was married to Malma Sanders of Dodson and they have made their home in Winnfield since that time. Survivors are his wife; two sons, William Cavitt Cookston, Jr., a senior in the Tulane Medical School, and Jimmie Cookston, a student at Louisiana Tech, Ruston; two daughters, Mrs. Ray Jenkins and Helen Marie Cookston, both of Winnfield; one granddaughter, Karen Frances Jenkins, of Winnfield; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Cookston, of Winnfield; a sister, Mrs. G. W. DeLaughter, of Sparkman, Ark.; and a brother, Lt. Commander Roy Cookston, U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific.
