John W. Van Cleave, a resident of the Winnfield Hotel, was released Monday from the Veterans Hospital in Alexandria. He had been at the hospital since July 8, when he was struck by a van at the intersection of Main and Laurel Streets. According to Winn Parish Sheriff's Office Deputy Gregg Davies, an autopsy was to be performed. Van Cleave was taken by ambulance to Winnfield General Hospital on July 8 after he was struck by a 1975 Dodge van driven by 19 year old Charles Roberts. The vehicle was registered to the Winn Parish Enterprise, P. O. Box 750, Winnfield. According to the accident report, filed by Winnfield City Police Officer Lawrence Desadier, the Roberts vehicle "was heading east on Main Street and pedestrian was attempting to cross the intersection of Main and Laurel Street in a northeast direction. The vehicle entered the intersection and hit the pedestrian as he was attempting to cross the street. The vehicle tried to avoid hitting the pedestrian by applying brakes and turning in a northeast direction but it was unavoidable."
