C. Lewis Held at Atlanta Former Winn Parish Citizen Dies at Home of Granddaughter in Alexandria Funeral services for Mrs. Mary C. Lewis, who died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Vivian Bonnette Rust, in Alexandria, Sunday night, were concluded at Atlanta Methodist Church and interment made in the Atlanta Cemetery Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. Mrs. Lewis, 81 years old, had made her home in Atlanta until a little more than two years ago when she removed to Alexandria to live with her granddaughter, Mrs. Rust, who with her daughter, Miss Helen Rust, are the only surviving near relatives. Mrs. Lewis was born on October 5, 1852, at Newman, Georgia, and came to Louisiana in a covered wagon in 1859, settling in Winn Parish. Her father, who was Rev. Thomas Stokely Collier, was a native of Tennessee and was instrumental in the founding of Atlanta College, one of the early educational institutions of this section, and was also an aid in getting the public schools of Atlanta recognized by the State Department of Education. He was a physician as well as an educator. Mrs. Lewis followed in the footsteps of her father by helping in educational work in Winn Parish, spending the early part of her life teaching. She has helped to educate twenty people. Her mother was Miss Lucinda Smith and the family is related to the Hardman family of Georgia. She was one of the early graduates of the Louisiana State Normal College. She was married twice, once to George A. Thrasher. To this union was born one daughter, Irene, who was the wife of the late Dr. J. V. Bonnette of Alexandria. She was later married to George C. Lewis. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.
