All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** >From the February 24, 1955 Winn Parish Enterprise-News American Winn Marine In Korea Dies Of Gunshot Wound Marine Corporal Johnny Malcom Cox, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Iley Cox of Winnfield, died from a gunshot wound in the head while on duty with the First Marine Division in Korea, according to a telegram received by his parents last Thursday, Feb. 17. No other details were given in the wire. Mrs. Cox said that she had heard news reports that the Marines were packing up to leave Korea and that the Koreans had attempted to take ammunition from them. She believes it possible her son might have been killed in some action resulting from that incident. A second telegram which arrived Wednesday of this week stated that the body will be sent from Japan on February 28 via air. Mrs. Cox said that they had last heard from their son by letter about a week ago. Johnny entered service July 8, 1954 and landed in Korea January 14, 1955. He had attended Winnfield High School, later worked at various jobs in Winnfield, and had been employed by the telephone company in Shreveport when he joined the Marines. Surviving are three brothers, Master Sergeant Clarence L. Cox, San Antonio; Albert L. Cox, Winnfield; Sergeant First Class Crockett J. Cox, Ft. Meade, Md.; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Dubois, Tyler, Texas; Mrs. Ophelia Hooder, Houston, Texas; and Frances Nell Cox, Winnfield; and his parents. Mr. Cox is a logger. Burial is planned in Guin Cemetery on Tullos Highway. Funeral arrangements have not been made pending arrival of the body. ----------------------------------- >From the March 17, 1955 Winn Parish Enterprise-News American Last Rites Held Here For Marine Killed In Korea Military funeral rites for Marine Cpl. Johnny Malcom Cox, 21, who was killed February 16, while on duty with the First Marine Division in Korea, were held at the South Winnfield Baptist Church Monday, March 14, at 10 a.m., with the pastor, Rev. Jerry Green, and a former pastor, Rev. S. J. Sjolander of Orange,Texas, officiating. Cpl. Cox's remains arrived here early Sunday after being flown to the United States from Japan. Burial was in the Curry Cemetery with the National Guard members of Winnfield in charge of the graveside rites. They also acted as pallbearers. In notifying Cox's parents, the defense department gave no details of how his death occurred, other than that he died from a gunshot wound in the head. In addition to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Iley Cox, of South Winnfield, the Marine is survived by three brothers, Master Sergeant Clarence L. Cox, San Antonio, Texas; Albert L. Cox, Winnfield; Sergeant First Class Crockett J. Cox, Ft. Meade, Md., three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Dubois, Tyler, Texas; Mrs. Ophelia Hooder, Houston, Texas; and Frances Nell Cox, Winnfield.
