The wood frame house at 501 East Lafayette St. was believed to have been ignited from a gas hot water heater in the rear of the house. Two trucks and 16 firefighters battled the blaze according to Larry Glenn of the Winnfield Fire Department. Amy Craft, 88, was bedridden when smoke overcame her despite two volunteer fireman, Michael Mixon and Terry Avant, entering the house to rescue her. They were not injured. Her daughter, Nancy Myers, was able to get out of the house and was treated at Winn Parish Medical Center for smoke inhalation and released. A volunteer fireman, Steve Barton, was hit by an antenna pole resulting in a bruised back but was released from the hospital. The 2:36 a.m. fire call Tuesday was answered by two fire trucks while a third was turned back because the blaze was under control. The Winnfield Police Department and the Winn Parish Sheriff's Office also responded to the emergency.
