Mr. R. H. Crew, Life Long Resident Of Winn Parish Passes Away

Mr. R. C. "Bob" Crew, an old and prominent citizen of Ward Five, Winn Parish,
died at his home near Mt. Zion, Monday afternoon, December 29, 1924.

Mr. Crew was the son of a Baptist Minister who moved to Winn Parish about
1855, from Alabama.  The subject of this sketch was born in Alabama, seventy-
six years ago, but moved with his parents to Winn Parish when he was a small
child and his entire life was spent in Winn Parish.  He did much towards
shaping the destiny of this then remote section during the dark days of the
Reconstruction Period.  He was a Veteran of the Colfax Riot and was a member
of that great Southern Organization known as the Regulators, or Ku Klux,
during the Reconstruction days, and did much toward driving the Carpet Baggers
and Scalawags from this section of the state and placing affairs of the state
in the hands of the White Democrats of Louisiana.  Mr. Crew was a good and
loyal citizen in the community in which he resided, was ever ready to
contribute to all charitable and religious causes and especially the public
schools of his parish.  He helped to build the Mt. Zion College at Mt. Zion
which was at that time one of the leading educational institutions of North
Louisiana, and served as a trustee and on its board of directors during the
entire life of he college.

Mr. Crew was a successful farmer and was known for years as one of Winn
Parish's most successful farmers and by hard work and economy accumulated a
nice fortune for a man of his opportunity which he left as a heritage to his
family.

He leaves two brothers, Mr. J. C. Crew of Montgomery and Uncle Charley Crew
of Basile, La., a wife and four children to mourn his loss.  His wife before
her marriage was Miss Bettie Gilcrease, a sister of Aunt Susan Jones, wife of
the late Bob Jones who was for years the clerk of court of Winn Parish.  The
children are Mrs. C. H. Elliott of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Maud Alley of
Lafayette, La., another married daughter living in Missouri, and one son, R.
P. Crew of Monroe, La.; besides a number of grandchildren and great
grandchildren.

It can be said of Mr. Crew that he was a man of superb honesty and integrity,
a typical gentleman of the Old School, and who set an example in life worthy
to be followed by all real Americans.
