All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: May 21, 1946 Winnfield News-American Last Rites Today For Virgil Crippen, 47, of Winnfield Local Railroad Man Dies Thursday Morning at Alexandria Funeral services for Virgil Crippen, 47, who died in an Alexandria hospital at 12:35 a.m. yesterday, Thursday, after a brief illness, will be conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the First Baptist Church with Rev. H. H. McBride, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Winnfield Cemetery under the direction of the Southern Funeral Home. A railroad man for 28 years, Mr. Crippen was first employed by the Tremont and Gulf railway on January 1, 1918 as a fireman, and several years later became a brakeman, which position he held until he was stricken. Pallbearers are former associates at the company, including Ed Gassiott, J. T. Steen, Dan Page, Houston Smith, Andrew Jenkins, and Jim Taylor. Mr. Crippen was a member of the First Baptist Church and of the Masonic fraternity. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hattie Porter Crippen; mother, Mrs. Mattie Crippen of Jefferson, Texas; three brothers, Frank and J. W. Crippen of Winnfield and Claude Crippen of Houston, Texas, and a sister, Mrs. Willie Goodwin of Fort Worth, Texas.
