Crippen, 70, Retired Railroad Man, Dies Friday James William Crippen, 70, retired Tremont and Gulf Railway Company conductor, died in a local hospital Friday, December 5. He had been ill for several months. Funeral services were held Saturday in First Baptist Church of which he was a member. The pastor, Dr. W. L. Holcomb, officiated, with Rev. Alwin Stokes and Rev. P. M. Caraway assisting. Burial was in Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Masonic services were held at the graveside. Mr. Crippen came to Winnfield from Texas in 1912 to work for American Creosote Co. The following year he started work for T. & G. and was conductor on the first commercial run by T. & G. from Winnfield to Monroe. He retired in 1948 with 35 years, 10 months service. He had been a Mason since 1910 and held the highest degrees in the York Rite, was a Shriner and Past Worthy Patron of the local Eastern Star chapter. He was also a member of the Winnfield Lions Club. Survivors are two sons, J. J. of Winnfield and Melvin of Houston, Tex., one daughter, Mrs. Juanita Lasyone of Winnfield, one brother, Frank of Winnfield, one sister, Mrs. Willie Goodman of Fort Worth, Tex., and nine grandchildren. Active pallbearers were members of the Commandery Lodge and Master Masons were honorary pallbearers.
