Cupp, deputy sheriff of Winn Parish under four former sheriffs, died at Phoenix, Arizona, Monday noon, and funeral services will be held here this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the First Baptist Church. Morgan, pastor of the First Methodist Church, and a former pastor of the deceased, Rev. L. D. Posey of Jena. Mr. Cupp, who has suffered with asthma for many years, was not considered in a serious condition until he attempted to make a trip to the mountains at Prescott, Arizona, where he hoped for better health. Death came while enroute to this section. The body accompanied by members of the family residing in Phoenix arrived here last night and was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. E. Jenkins, to await the services this afternoon. Mr. Cupp was a member of the Baptist Church and a Woodman of the World. He was married to Miss Ella Bolen in 1888 and to them several children were born, six of whom with their mother survive him. He was born in Claiborne Parish and in early childhood moved to Winn Parish making his home in the Corinth Community. In 1903 he moved to Winnfield and became affiliated with the sheriff's office as a deputy under Sheriff B. W. Bailey, and for the next three sheriffs, F. L. Shaw, J. J. Payne, and the late W. T. Heflin, he served in the same capacity. At intervals in his career as an officer he was employed as special agent for the Louisiana & Arkansas Railway Company and the Tremont Lumber Company and for a period of several years was woods foreman for the Tremont Lumber Company, still maintaining his deputyship. Failing health necessitated him seeking a different climate and in 1922 he with his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he engaged in peace officer work, proving himself a fearless and courageous man at all times.
