Charles M. Curry S/Sgt. Charles M. Curry, 27, died March 5, Sunday, after suffering a brain hemorrhage at his home in DeQuincy at 10 p.m. Saturday. He had moved from Winnfield to DeQuincy last spring and was permanently assigned as a National Guard Administrative and Supply Specialist at the 228 Engineers Armory, a Leesville Unit at DeQuincy. He was a mess sergeant with the Winnfield National Guard Unit while here and he was a member of the Winnfield Fire Department. He died in an ambulance enroute from Lake Charles to Oschner's Foundation Hospital in New Orleans where he would have undergone emergency brain surgery. His wife and a doctor were with him at the time of death, 5:40 a.m. Sunday on the outskirts of Baton Rouge. Curry is survived here by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Curry, two sisters, Mrs. Eugene Johnson and Miss Brenda Curry; a sister, Mrs. James Hardin lives in Denham Springs, and another Mrs. Jack Dalby is in West Monroe. His brother, L. C. Curry, is in Baton Rouge. He has a son, Charles, Jr., age 4. His death was the third since January 1st of young men from Winnfield who died unexpectedly and the fourth in the past six months. The other deaths were Joel King Gates, 26, brain hemorrhage, Billy Kelley, 32, heart attack, and James McCarty, 32, heart attack. Funeral services for Sgt. Curry were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hixson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. C. C. Martin, Rev. Waynon Mott, and Rev. F. W. Weston officiating. Burial was in Gorham Cemetery in Joyce. Pallbearers were National Guardsmen 1st Sgt. C. H. Fryar, SFC. Robert Addington, S/Sgt. Gary Baillio, S/Sgt. Hawkins, S/Sgt. Ernest Weaver, and S/Sgt. E. E. Jones, all members of Central and Southwest La. Units. Members of the Winnfield Fire Department and Volunteers served as honorary pallbearers. Winnfield and other Louisiana Guardsmen served as an honor guard.
