Mr. Mercer, age 74 of Winnfield, LA died Thursday, March 27, 2003 in the Winn Parish Medical Center. He was born in Port Arthur, TX, was the son of James Lee Mercer Sr. and Hallie Jones Mercer of Winn Parish. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Korean Conflict. He was retired from the Winn Parish Police Jury's motor patrol unit. He was a member of the Big Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Dunn, age 85 of Atlanta, La died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 in her residence. She was born in Atlanta, was the daughter of Wymond and Edna Viola Stroud Graff. She was a homemaker and a member of the Atlanta Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Jimmy Dunn and Danny Stroud, both of Atlanta, LA; two daughters, Edna Ann Evans and husband Thomas J. of Longstreet, LA and Vicki Fletcher of Atlanta, LA; two sisters, Mary Brookshier of Carrollton, TX and Marlyne Parnell of Carrollton, TX; one brother, Robert L. Graff of Denver, CO; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.******************** Augusta Peters Peterson Augusta Peters Peterson, age 89, long-time staff assistant on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. died February 24, 2003, at her home, Vinson Hall, a retirement community in McLean, Virginia. Mrs. Peterson was born January 29, 1914, in Shreveport, Louisiana. She attended Louisiana State University and served as secretary in the Louisiana Department of Labor and legal secretary for Louisiana Collector of Revenue, as well as secretary-office manager for the law firm of Brumfield, Hebert & Rush, during which time she was also Legislative Assistant and Clerk of the Louisiana Senate Finance Committee, all in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Following World War II she became a court reporter for the United States Department of the Army in Tokyo, Japan, spending five years there before moving on to serve as Conference Reporter and Technical Assistant for the United States Government in Taipei, Taiwan during 1952 and 1953. After briefly working as a court reporter in Louisiana, in 1954 she joined the Washington staff of United States Senator Allen J. Ellender of Louisiana, serving as his Office Manager. In 1965 she was appointed Clerk of the Food Control Subcommittee of the Committee on Public Works of the United States House of Representatives. She retired from that position in 1971. In 1968 she married Lewis V. Peterson, an audio-visual expert who had pioneered the use of motion pictures for instructional purposes and who later helped organize the educational television station at the University of Illinois at Champaign, Illinois. In 1983 Mrs. Peterson was elected as a Senator to Virginia's first Silver Haired Legislature, a model general assembly for the elderly. Even in retirement she remained active in helping members of her church and of her woman's club. Despite never having had any children of her own, Mrs. Peterson nurtured, tutored and mentored numerous young people, including her grandchildren, children of Louisiana friends, Capitol Hill staffers, and members of her church. Her life put her in contact with talented people who [with] whom she established life-long friendships. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, 10:00 a.m. at the Fairlington United Methodist Church, Alexandria, Virginia. Interment will be in Shreveport, Louisiana, at the Greenwood Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held for Mrs. Peterson on July 19 at Greenwood Cemetery in Shreveport, LA. She was preceded in death by her father James Spicer Peters and her mother Maimie Rutledge Brigham. She is survived by three step-daughters, Judith Stevens of Jacksonville, Florida, Penny Peterson of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Christine Brinkley of Champaign, Illinois; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; niece Jo Collins Williams of Bellville, Texas; and numerous great nieces and great nephews. A Winnfield native, he graduated from Winnfield High School and attended Louisiana State Normal College. From 1942-1946, he served with the U.S. Army Air Cops, completing 13 months on Guam during World War II. Throughout his life, he was very active in numerous civic groups, including the Winn Historical Society, and the Winn Parish Library, where he served as a board member for 20 years. A member of First United Methodist Church in Winnfield, he taught Sunday school for many years. In 1969, he received the Silver Beaver award for his services to the Boy Scouts of America. He was employed as Safety and Personnel Director for Tremont Lumber Company from 1961 to 1977. Mr. Shell is preceded in death by his son John Denton Shell, parents D. F. and Della Peters Shell, and sister Doris Shell. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mildred King Shell. daughter Susan Elise Shell, sister, Dorothy Shell, brother Dudley Shell, twin brother Dennis Shell, five nieces and three nephews. Mr. Semon was educated at Fair Park High School and was the retired owner of Frontier Heating & Air Conditioning in Shreveport and the Big Econ Mobile Home Park in Orlando, FL. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield, was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Scottish Rite, the Shrine and Eastern Star. He served in the Seabees in the United States Navy during the Pacific Campaign of World War II. Mr. Semon was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and John Edgar Semon; his son Kenneth Ronald Semon; and two brothers, Olin Semon and Eugene Semon. She worked as an LPN at the Winnfield General Hospital in Winnfield from 1954- 1985. She was also a member of First Assembly of God in Winnfield, LA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clyde McLeod and one son, Micheal Gerald McLeod. Formerly of Winnfield, Mrs. Brewton had been a resident of Sarasota, Florida for ten years. Mrs. Brewton, born in Dodson, was a member of a pioneer Winn Parish family. Her parents were Robert Luther Stovall of Dodson, and Thera Anna Nicholson Stovall of Baton Rouge. Mrs. Brewton was a devoted mother and grandmother. A graduate of the St. Louis Art Institute, she was an artist, homemaker and worked for many years with the Tremont and Gulf Railroad, and the Winn Parish School Board Office. One of her greatest joys during her years in Sarasota was working actively with Nellie's Deli, Market and Catering, which is owned by her daughter Fredda and husband Craig. She used her artistic talent to enhance the weddings and other special events catered by Nellie's. Mrs. Brewton was a member of Calvary Church-Church of Hope of Sarasota. Mrs. Brewton was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and brother. She was the widow of the late Latnie L. Brewton Sr. of Winnfield. She is survived by daughters Fredda Jensen Pohl and husband Craig of Sarasota, and Jan Jensen Jarrett and husband Jim of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and two grandchildren who adored her, Anna Elizabeth and John Paul Jarrett. Burial will be in Garden of Memories at a later date.
