Mrs. Oakes was born in Sikes, LA on September 13, 1907. She lived in Winnfield, LA where she passed on Saturday, April 31, 2004. Mrs. Oakes was a housewife and a member of the Palestine number 55 OES. Mrs. Oakes was preceded in death by her daughter Betty Lou Creel; husbands Louie Brand and James R Oakes; and by brothers Oscar White, Ira White, Arthur White and Horace White. She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Bozeman and husband Estes of Winnfield, LA, and Jimmie Jean Corry and husband Glynn of Ruston, LA; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren: and two great-great grandchildren. Visitation was for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday April 4, 2004 at Edmonds Funeral Home. The service was held Monday, April 5, 2004 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel under the officiating Rev Kenneth Tarver. Interment took place at the Sikes Cemetery. Pallbearers were John O. Creel, Randy Creel, Matt Creel, Charles Abraham, Michael Long, and Stephen Long.************************ Janis Elizabeth Grubbs Powell Services for Janis Elizabeth Grubbs Powell were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 3, 2004 at First Baptist Church in Winnfield, LA under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Jan was born in Monroe, LA. on July 25, 1951 and passed away March 31, 2004 at Willis Knighton Medical Center in Shreveport, LA. She is survived by one son, Mark Edward Powell of Haughton, LA and one daughter and son in law, Jenni Powell Roberts and Steve Roberts of Haughton, LA. Her mother Kate Grubbs, brother and sister in law Mark and Sandy Grubbs and their children Graham and Caroline, also survives her. Also surviving are two aunts, Ruth Jackson and husband Carl, and Beryl Lord, all of Monroe, LA, Her father Clarence Russell Grubbs precedes her in death. Honorary pallbearers were: Bobby Guin, Lamar Tarver, Harry Brown, and Joe Collins. The family would like to give a special thanks to the doctors and nursing staff of the Intensive Care Unit, the Three West Unit and the Transplant Clinic of Willis Knighton Medical Center of Shreveport, LA. Interment will follow in the Winnfield City Cemetery in Winnfield under the direction of Riser Funeral Home of Olla. Mrs. Powers was born in Winnfield on January 7, 1915 to the union of Clarence E. and Bertie Foshee Tannehill and died Thursday, April 1, 2004 at her residence in Urania. She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught school in Webster and LaSalle parishes. She was a member of the Urania Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Henry James Powers. Survivors include her brother, William M. Tannehill of Urania and her nieces and nephews, Steve Tannehill of Urania, Janet T. Matter of Calhoun, Inez T. Fragala of Archibald, Robert Tannehill of Houston, TX, Peggy West of Hartford, Conn, and Grey Powers of Dallas, TX. She was a registered nurse and had retired from the Winn Parish Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Hardy Thompson and the late Susie (Johnson) Thompson. Mr. Burson passed away Saturday, April 10, 2004 in Winnfield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtis (Adams) Burson and his parents Jeter and Lois (Hicks) Burson. He was a member of the American Legion, Cedar Grove Post 6 of Shreveport, LA, and was also a Mason. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Mr. Burson served in the Air Force and received an honorable discharge. He is a retired Lt. from the Shreveport Police Department. Mr. Burson was also a Deputy Sheriff and Warden for the Winn Parish Sheriff's Department. She was a member of Sikes Apostolic Church. She was the daughter of the late Joe Rolen and the late Maggie (Oglesbee) Rolen. Mrs. Trawick, age 87, of Winnfield, died Monday, April 19, 2004 in Maison DeVille Care Center, Natchitoches after a lengthy illness. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Winnfield where she taught a children's Sunday School class for 40 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Trawick, her parents, W. Festus and Minnie DeBusk, one sister, Lois Lovell, and brothers, W.F. Debusk Jr., Charles DeBusk, Louis DeBusk and Billy DeBusk. He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran. He is survived by his two daughters, Debrah Howing of Little Rock, Ark.; and Sarah Hibbard of Monroe; four sons, Danny M. Weeks of Lone, Calif.; Timothy W. Weeks of Monroe; Mark Weeks of Danville, La.; Dudley Weeks of Brittany Germany; two sisters, Violet E. Palmer of Goldonna; and Christine Hibbard of Goldonna; one brother, Evyonne Weeks of Goldonna; ten grandchildren and 11 Nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Yankee Springs Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Sunday April 18 with Rev. Craig Stephens and Glyn Mixon officiating. Visitation was at the church the day of the service from 1 p.m. until time of services. Interment was held at Yankee Springs Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. She was born in Dallas, TX on September 7, 1909, and died at Winn Medical Center, March 30, 2004, at the age of 94. She is survived by two daughters, Marjorie L. Hinton, of Winnfield, LA, and Corrie A. George of Teague, Texas; and one son, Raymond H. McKay of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She had nine grandchildren, eleven, great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. James Simons officiating. Burial followed in the Wright Cemetery at Sikes, LA. Mr. Underwood, age 46 of Sikes, LA died on Saturday, April 24 in Sikes, LA. He was a member of the Louisiana Loggers Association and was employed by Lowell Hubbard Logging. He was preceded in death by his father, James Lavelle Underwood, Sr. Survivors are one son, Jeremy Underwood of Dodson, LA; one daughter, Andrea Underwood of Ruston, LA; mother Patty Jo Underwood of Sikes, LA; two sisters, Mary Kendrick and Retta Roberts of West Monroe, LA; and a twin sister, Jeannie Horton of Jena, LA. Long, age 70, a retired office manager, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2004, in Fort Worth, TX. She was born January 5, 1934 in Winnfield, LA. She fought a long courageous battle with breast cancer. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Long and Lessie Mae Long; and her brothers, James A. Long and W.O. Long. Survivors include her daughter, Cindy Beauchamp and her husband, Ed; step- grandchildren, Bryce and Corbin Beauchamp, all of Arlington; her sisters, Cornelia Pray of Winnfield, Priscilla Bedgood and her husband, Norman of Goldonna, LA, and Scarlett Gates and her husband, Bobby of Winnfield, LA. Mary is also survived by numerous other family members and friends. Services are under the direction of Southern Funeral Home, 202, E. Lafayette St., Winnfield, LA, where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday, April 29, 2004 from 8-10 a.m. Funeral services will be in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, April 29, 2004 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Winnfield. A visitation was also held on Monday, April 26, 2004 at Greenwood Funeral Home in Fort Worth, TX. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery near Calvin under the direction of Southern Funeral Home, Jonesboro, Louisiana.
