She was born on September 29, 1919 in Dodson, LA. She lived in Shreveport, LA from 1959 until moving to Lubbock in 1983. She married Urbon S. Alewine on September 23, 1983 in Lubbock. She was a member of the Church of the Harvest Assembly of God. A grandson Howard Holmes preceded her in death. She moved to Des Moines from Natchitoches, LA. Agnes and her late husband, Edward, had lived in Wilton, Iowa for many years before retiring to Natchitoches, LA. She was a retired public school teacher, a member of Des Moines First Baptist Church and Northwestern State University Alumni Association. Agnes was an avid reader and enjoyed watching sports. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward and one daughter, Joan Engling. Pallbearers were Craig Bartley, Kyle Whisonant, Mickey Smith, Jimmy Long, Brent Chandler and Brad Smith.********************** Obituaries, Winn Parish Enterprise, Winnfield, Louisiana, January 16, 2002, Page 7-B Hiram James Wright Sr. Funeral services were held Friday, January 11, for retired district court judge Hiram James Wright Sr. who died January 9. He was 78. The Jonesville native and World War II veteran had a life-long interest in law and the judicial system and was described as a "big-hearted person who understood the common man." Wright attended Block High School in Jonesville and was graduated from Baton Rouge High in 1940. He attended LSU prior to the outbreak of WWII. He graduated from Officers Candidate School and was sent to Europe at the time of the D-Day invasion. Wright went ashore at Utah Beach shortly following the June 6, 1944, invasion but was captured by the Germans and remained a prisoner of war until January 1945. Following his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1946, he returned to LSU and received his law degree in 1948. Wright moved to Winnfield where he set up a law practice for 21 years before entering public office, elected city judge in 1969. Four years later, he was appointed to fill the remaining term of the late Eighth Judicial District Court Judge Harwell Allen. Wright served in that position until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Louisiana State and Winn Parish Bar Associations, Winnfield Rotary Club and VFW Post 3800. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church where he taught the Crusaders for Christ Men's Bible Class for over 30 years. "Judge Wright understood the common man," said local historian Gregg Davies. "He told me that the courts belong to the common people. Some judges and attorneys think the courts are for judges and attorneys but they're really for the common people, he told me." For that reason, Davies said Judge Wright went "above and beyond" to ensure that everyone--witnesses, spectators, attorneys and defendants--felt right in his courtroom. "He was a benevolent sort of guy who had a big heart for people who couldn't do any better." He was also described as a patriotic man and a great story-teller with a sense of humor. He was also a dedicated family man. Wright was preceded in death by one son, Hiram James Wright Jr.; his parents, Howard William Wright and Myra Rowena Randall Wright; one brother, Howard William Wright Jr.; and one sister, Lucille Wright Carter. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Poe Wright of Winnfield; one son and daughter-in-law, Earle Wesley Wright and Kim Wright of Baton Rouge; two daughters, Katherine Ann King of Baton Rouge and Mary Elizabeth Vaughan and her husband Hines of Sandy, Utah; two sisters, Myrtis Wright Thornton of Baton Rouge and Norma Wright Braden of Birmingham, Ala.; one brother, Randall E. Mr. Alley died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, in Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Lafayette. He was a grandson of the late Bob Crew of Wheeling, a Winn Parish pioneer, civic, and religious leader. Mr. Alley is survived by his wife, Genevieve A. Alley of Gueydan; three daughters, Cheryl Howard of Greenwich, Conn., Floyce Reginato of Hedgeville, W. Va., Sondra Spense of Redding, Calif.; a stepson, Barney Leifeste of Fairfax, Va.; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one step-great grandchild. Local relatives include Linda and Gregg Davies of Winnfield, who attended the services; Cecil and Vernon Tilton of Wheeling, Frank Crew and Mabel Downs of Montgomery. Mr. Alley was a frequent visitor to Winn Parish. A chemist, Mr. Alley worked as a chemical engineer and war aide to General Douglas MacArthur in Japan, where he was the first white man to climb Mount Fugiama in the winter. He later moved to Los Angeles, co-founded the Los Angeles Shooting Ranges, worked as an aerospace metallurgist, and taught adult education at night. At the time of his death, Mr. Alley was the world's oldest competitive aerobatics pilot and had received many national awards for his "stunt" piloting. Mr. Alley was a member of Gueydan First Baptist Church, served as president of the Gueydan Museum and Cultural Arts Society, and was a member of the National Aerobatics Club. He was an active conservationist. He was a 1942 graduate of LSU. After his retirement from the American Creosote Works, he worked as a Landman securing oil and gas leases. Newman, 80 were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home in Haughton, LA. Officiating was Rev. Rolly Walker. Interment followed in Hill Crest Memorial Park. Coach Newman died Monday, January 21, 2002 in Bossier City after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Ponchatoula and had lived the last thirty-five years in Benton. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II and a 1948 graduate of Louisiana Tech. Coach Newman coached and taught high school for 33 years from 1949-1982 at Lake Providence, Winnfield, Benton and Trinity Heights. His high school coaching record was 202-127-7. Prior to his coaching and teaching career, he was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1948 but an injury forced him out of professional football. In 1995 Coach Newman was inducted into the Louisiana Tech Athletic Hall of Fame both as a player and coach. He was selected as a member of the all-century football team at Louisiana Tech last year. He was also a member of the national association of grandstand quarterbacks which is composed of his college football teammates from the 1940's at Tech. Although is generation knew him as "Hoss", two other generations knew him only as "coach". One well-respected sportswriter wrote after his retirement, "he was one of the last of a vanishing breed of coaches who was a throwback to the days when giants walked the sidelines and stood tall among crewcut boys. He left the fancy formations to the younger coaches. He knew that blocking and tacking won games and always lined his teams up in a full-house backfield. The other teams knew what he was going to run, but if you weren't fully prepared, he would give you an old-fashioned country whipping. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Billie Newman; three daughters, Sandra Dyson and husband Don of Ruston, Jody Struckmeyer and husband David of Dallas, TX, and Renee Ryan and husband Robert of Benton; eight grandchildren, Darrell Dyson, Brian Dyson, Laura Causey, Suzanne Dyson, Nancy Padial, Joseph Johnson, B. J. Ryan and Brad Ryan; and six great grandchildren; Nicholas and Abigail Dyson, Cameron Causey, and Victoria, Daniel and Michael Padial. Dovie Tyler, 88 of Colfax, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002 in Rapides Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Tyler was a native of Winn Parish and lived in Colfax since 1956. She and her husband owned Tyler's In and Out. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene since 1945 and a member of the Colfax Christian Women's Association. She was a resident of Kingsley Place at Alexandria, LA for the past year and a half. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester A. Tyler; two sons, Philip Tyler and Jimmy Charles Tyler; and her parents, Albert and Lena Kornegay Waller. He was a native of Trout, LA, a member of First Baptist Church and Kingdom Builders Sunday School Class; Winnfield Kiwanis Club; Winn Parish Retired Teachers Association; graduate of LA Tech with a Masters degree from Northeast University plus 30 hours at Northwestern Louisiana State University; a US Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a teacher, coach and principal at Sikes High School. Mrs. Weakley was born in Chatham, LA and had resided in Shreveport for the past 50 years. She passed away Tuesday, January 15, 20002 after a lengthy illness. She graduated from the Charity Hospital School of Nursing in Shreveport in 1938. She continued her education with courses from LSU and Northwestern State College. She was a dedicated nurse at Martin Hospital in Winnfield, LA before moving to Shreveport with her family in 1952. She resumed her work in 1953 as a compassionate nurse, supervisor and assistant director of nursing for Confederate Memorial Hospital (LSU-MC) until retiring in 1975. She was a member of the Methodist faith. Mrs. Weakley was loved and respected by all who were blessed to know her. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Noah and Linnie Fordham; her husband, Paul Weakley; a brother, Woodrow Fordham and a sister, Chlotine Wyatt. She is survived by her loving and caring family: daughter, Kay Clemens and husband Barney; son, Gerald Weakley and wife Kerry, both of Shreveport; three sisters, Lucille Fordham of Blanchard, LA, Marjorie Mae of Winnfield, LA and Colleen Taylor of Washington, LA; one sister-in-law, Mona Faye Fordham of Jonesboro, LA; a dear friend, Jean Hewin of Blanchard.
