Mrs. Thera Stovall Stearns, resident of Parkview Care Center, passed away Sunday, July 4, 1999 in the Winn Parish Medical Center. Mrs. Stearns, a native of Dodson, was a member of a Pioneer Winn Parish family. She was the daughter of Thera Nicholson and Robert Luther Stovall and granddaughter of Col. James W. Nicholson of Baton Rouge. Mrs. Stearns attended NSU (Normal) and LSU, Baton Rouge where she earned a Masters Degree. During her teaching career she taught at Northwestern State University, Dodson High School, and Minden High School. Her fondest memories were of Dodson High School. She later taught at Michigan State University where she retired after 35 years. She and her husband, Dr. troy L. Stearns, served several interesting assignments abroad for MSU, including England, Singapore, and Nigeria. They were privileged to travel extensively around the world. She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by one sister, Margaret Stovall Brewton of Sarasoto FL; three nieces Jan Jarrett of Shreveport, Fredda Pohl of Sarasoto, FL; and Carolyn Dippie and family of Marion, IL; one nephew Ronald Bernhard, also of Marion, IL; one great niece Anna Elizabeth Jarrett and one nephew John Paul Jarrett of Shreveport. He worked for several years as Recreation Director for the City of Winnfield. Mrs. Swanson, 86, passed away at Summit Hospital, Bossier City, Louisiana, Wednesday, July 21, 1999 at 4 p.m., following a short illness. She is survived by two sons, Clyde F. She was a member of United Baptist Church. Officiating were Dr. Calvin Phelps and Rev. Roy Moore. Burial followed in the Garden of Memories. Mr. Zimmerman, 72, of Winnfield died Thursday, July 22, 1999 in his residence. He was a native of Polo, Missouri and owner and operator of Trucking Company and Service Station. Survivors are his wife, Mary Turner Zimmerman of Winnfield; one son, Lee Zimmerman and his wife, Julie of Winnfield; one sister, Betty Hockalander of Kansas City, Kansas; a granddaughter, Katy Zimmerman of Winnfield. Mr. Foster, age 74, of Winnfield died Saturday, July 24, 1999 at his residence. He was a member of Berean Baptist Church and an Army Aircorps World War II veteran. He received an Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with 4 bronze stars, Philippine Liberation ribbon with 2 bronze stars, good conduct medal and World War II Victory medal. Survivors include his wife, Mell Foster of Winnfield; three sons, Gary Foster of Atlanta, Tommy Foster of Calvin and Camille Shelfo of Guadalajara, Mexico; three daughters, Mattie Kaye Thornhill of Alexandria, Kathleen Schappert of Houston, Texas and Marleen Chetham of Seneville, Georgia; one brother Rudolph Foster of Winnfield; six grandchildren and six great children [great grandchildren]. Burial followed in the Mt. Zion Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Irene Edna Greer, age 79, of Alexandria died Saturday, July 24, 1999 at Rapides Regional Medical Center. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and was a psychiatric Aide retired from Central Hospital. Survivors include one daughter, Delores Gayle Peterson of Henderson, Nevada; two sisters, Ardis Stroud and Audrey Marie Carroll fo [of] Montgomery; three brothers, Steve Garner of Houston, Texas, Wade Garner of Montgomery and Huey Garner of Lagrange, Texas and one grandchild.************************ H. D. Canerday Funeral services for H.D. Canerday, age 79, of Singer, LA were held at 10 am. Monday, July 26, 1999 in the First Presbyterian Church of DeRidder under the direction of Snider Funeral Home, DeQuincy, LA. Services were also conducted Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at 11 a.m. in Bethlehem Baptist Church of Calvin, LA with Dr. Calvin Phelps officiating. Burial was in the Bethlehem Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield. Mr. Canerday died Saturday, July 24, 1999 at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, Lake Charles, LA. He was a native of Calvin and had resided in Singer since 1969. He was a graduate of Calvin High School and an All State Basketball player on the Calvin High School State Championship team in 1939. He received his Bachelor and Masters of Education Degrees from Northwestern University in Natchitoches. He was a teacher, coach, principal and supervisor in Natchitoches Parish before retiring from the Louisiana Public School System. Mr. Canerday was a member of the Beauregard Parish School System, Rotary Club of DeQuincy, V.F.W. Post 3802 of DeQuincy, and various other local clubs and organizations. He was president of Beauregard Parish Farm Bureau, served on the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Farm Bureau, and on the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Heart O' Dixie Tennessee Walking Horse Association. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member and an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of DeRidder. He is survived by his wife, Carol C. Canerday of Singer, LA; a son, Ronald D. Canerday of Calvin, LA; a daughter, Charlotte Page of Calvin, LA; four step-sons, James K. "Jamie" White of DeRidder, LA, Bill White of Singer, LA, Robert A. "Bobby" White of Vidor, Texas and Michael T. "Mike" White of Haughton, LA; one brother, J.D. Canerday of Calvin, LA; 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
