Mr. Smith resided in Austin, TX. Leonard was born in Winnfield, Louisiana on August 26. 1920. Following his college years at Louisiana State University and upon his ROTC graduation in 1940, he resigned his commission with the U.S. Army Infantry Reserve to enter the U.S. Air Corps Flying School as a flying cadet. He subsequently served in the China-Burma India Theater where he flew numerous missions across the infamous "Hump". Leonard spent the last days of World War II as a pilot evacuating overseas prisoners of war from Java, Indonesia and Thailand before the peace agreement was signed. He was awarded many decorations, including, the Distinguished Flying Cross. He returned to the U.S. in December, 1945. In January, 1946, Leonard married Mary Belle Ahlstrom. After working for the Civil Aeronautics Administration, he began his career as a corporate pilot in 1949. Leonard flew for several different companies before going to work for Shary-Shivers Foundation in 1960. He served as Chief Pilot and Administrative Assistant for Governor Allan Shivers until his death in 1985. He continued in that capacity for Allan Shivers, Jr. until his retirement in the early 1990's. Leonard was a Deacon at Hyde Park Baptist Church and a member of the Layman's Sunday School Class. He was a Master Mason, a member of the Winnfield Masonic Lodge. He was a 33 degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the Austin Scottish Rite Bodies, and a Shriner. Leonard took pride in his years of service as Trustee of the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. In 1989, Leonard was instrumental in establishing the Austin Scottish Rite Learning Center for Dyslexic Children. He served on the Board of Directors for many years. Leonard is survived by his wife, Mary Belle, son and wife, Steve and Pam Smith of Leander, son, David Smith of Austin, son and wife, Daniel and Linda Smith of Bastrop, 5 grandchildren, Matthew, Rachel, Ashley, Edward and Jared. He is also survived by his sister and husband, Elaine and Bill Poe of Winnfield, Louisiana. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Smith, Sr. and Ottis Smith, and one brother, Albert Smith, Jr. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on May 25, 2005 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, with Dr. Ralph M. Smith officiating. Burial followed at Austin Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Gordon Kelso, Bob Northcutt, George Smith, Carl Daly, Dan Gardner and Bruce Oliver. Joan Johnson Bundrick was born August 30, 1938 and passed away Sunday, May 29, 2005 from an unexpected illness. She is survived by her husband Charles E. Bundrick of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, formally of Winnfield. She is also survived by her children, Lanaya McManus of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Jeff Johnson and his wife Colleen of Bixby, Oklahoma, Shawna Sims and her husband Brad, Melinda Ryan and her husband Scott of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Laura Clark and her husband Bradd of Claremore, Oklahoma, and Angela Eversull and her husband Van of Natchitoches, Louisiana, as well as 19 grandchildren and one great- granddaughter. Dorcas recently retired as a realtor and was past board president of SHARE Inc. and SHOW Inc., organizations supporting the developmentally disabled in the community. She was best known to give her time and compassion unconditionally to countless individuals. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known her. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Calvin. She was the daughter of the late Lloyd "Jack" Denmon of Winnsboro. Mrs. Haire was also preceded in death by her brother, lackie Dale Denmon. She is survived by her husband Reginald Bryan Haire of Goldonna, La.; her mother, Shirley Denmon of Winnsboro, La; three daughters, Brittany Nicole Haire of Goldonna, La., Hannah Alyce Haire of Goldonna, La., Emily Faith Haire of Goldonna, La; two step daughters, Jean Ann Capps and her husband Robert of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Julie Lynn Williams and her husband John of Woodstock, Ga; one step son, William Bryan Haire and his wife Lisa of Baker, La; three brothers, Ricky Lloyd Denmon of West Monroe, La., Mickey William Denmon of Winnsboro, La., Todd Scott Denmon of Winnsboro, La; a special nephew, Tyler Scott Denmon of Winnsboro, La; numerous grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of Calvin at 10 am. Monday, June 27, 2005 with Rev. Carrol Garlington and Rev. Lamar Carpenter officiating. Interment followed at Coates Cemetery in Winnsboro, La under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.************************ Francis Edwina (Barnes) Melton Mrs. Francis Edwina (Barnes) Melton age 75, of Winnfield, La., passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2005. at the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, La. She was a member of Laurel Heights Baptist Church of Winnfield. Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by her husband, David Melton; her parents, Alvin Barnes and Cuma (Hickman) Barnes; and her sister Aline Gentry. She is survived by her one daughter, Kay Bryant and her husband Joel of Verda, La; two sons, Steve Melton and his wife Janette of Campti, La., Donnie Melton of Winnfield, La; one sister, Jerry Stroud of Winnfield, La; two grandchildren, David Johnson and his wife Allison, Justin Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Johnson and John David Johnson. Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield, La. Graveside services were held at the Garden Of Memories Cemetery at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 16, 2005, with Rev. Kenneth Tarver officiating.************************ James Joe Carpenter Graveside services for James Joe Carpenter, age 75, were held Saturday June 25, 2005 at Cypress Creek Cemetery with Reverend Elton Gunter officiating. Burial was held in Cypress Creek under the direction of Southern Funeral Home, Jonesboro, Louisiana. Mr. Carpenter passed away June 22, 2005 at his residence after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his wife. Lillian. He served his country in the United States Navy and he was a Deputy Sheriff in Law Enforcement. James Joe Carpenter is survived by one son, James J. Carpenter, Jr. and his wife Judy of Sicily Island; one daughter, Sharon Guin of Sicily Island; four brothers, O.E. Carpenter and wife Mary Virginia of Newelton, B.R. Carpenter and wife Pat of Gansville, S. F. Carpenter and wife Faye of Minden, J.D. Carpenter and wife Kathy of Clearwater, Fl; one sister, Elizabeth Barnhill of Sour Lake, TX; four aunts, Murlene Carpenter of Dodson, Virgie Carpenter of West Monroe, Nola McDonald of Tallulah and Audrice Crawford of West Monroe; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Bud Acker, Janna and Enck Chauvin all of Sicily Island; three great grandchildren, Juleigh Acker, Jenna Chauvin and James Richard Acker. Pallbearers were Michael Carpenter, Nicholas Carpenter, Spencer Carpenter, Ken Carpenter, Ernie Dennis, Joey Dennis, Bud Acker, Erick Chauvin. Honorary pallbearers were Russell Durbin, Buford Shively, Ronnie Carpenter,Charlie Colvin, and C.O. Acker.
