Evans Funeral services for Mabel E. Evans were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2000 in the Laurel Heights Baptist Church. Officiating were Revs. Charles Haley, Bob Braly and Bennie McBride. Burial followed in the Sardis Cemetery near Winnfield under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Mrs. Evans, 86 of Lagrange, GA, formerly of Winnfield, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000 in the West GA Hospice in Lagrange, GA. She was a Winnfield native, a homemaker and a member of Laurel Heights Baptist Church. Survivors are one son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Kay Evans of Atlanta, GA; one daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Harold Garrett of Lagrange, GA; six grandchildren Steve and Marie Garrett of Alpha Retta [Alpharetta], GA, Ron and Malissa Garrett of Lagrange, GA, Bill and Lia Garrett of Lagrange, LA , Glenda and Yues Berthelot of Atlanta, GA, Bob and Katie Evans of Atlanta, LA; 12 great grandchildren, Stephen, Zachary and Matthew Garrett; Heather and Erin Deadwyler; Brittany Garrett, Daryl and Loren King, Brooke and Emily Garrett, Alexandra and Claire Berthelot. Mr. Payne died on Thursday, February 24, 2000 in the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, LA. He was a native of Oakdale, LA, and a resident of Winnfield. Mrs. Whitehead, age 64 of Winnfield, died February 27, 2000 at Jackson Parish Hospital in Jonesboro. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was retired from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. Mrs. Whitehead was a member of a Past Worthy Matron of Palestine Chapter #55 Order of the Eastern Star. She was Past Grand Esther and a member of the Estarl Board of the Louisiana Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include: her husband, Clifford D. Mr. Burk, 90 of Calvin, LA died Sunday, February 20, 2000 in Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fl. He was a native of Mineola, AR and was a tool pusher in the oil field. Survivors are two sons, Robert "Bob" Burk of Pensacola, FL and Bill Burk of Fort Worth, TX; one daughter, Claudine Aston of Calvin, LA; 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were: Jim Bob Carson, Buster Carson, David Karl Burk, Steven Burk, Paul Burk and Mark Hansen.********************** Ruby (Jordan) Adams Funeral services for Ruby (Jordan) Adams were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2000 in the Welcome Home Baptist Church of the Hudson Community, Dodson, Louisiana. Burial was in the Church Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home, Winnfield, LA. Mrs. Adams' body lay in state at the church from 4 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2000 until time for the funeral Saturday. The land was donated for this church and cemetery by Mrs. Adams and her late sister, Ruth Jordan in 1937. On November 10, 1911, Mrs. Adams was born in the Hudson Community, less than 1/4 mile from where she resided for the remainder of her life. Her age was 88 years, 3 months and 7 days. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Victoria (Busby) Jordan in 1917; her father, Oscar Jordan, in 1972; step mother, Clara Jordan in 1986; and sister Ruth Jordan in 1985. Welcome Home Baptist Church's pastor, Bro. Bill Moore and a close friend of the family, Bro. Lester Carpenter, officiated. The musicians were Carolyn Addington at the organ and Janette Moore at the piano. Delton Carpenter did Mr. Adams' favorite song "Arms of Love" as a solo. Matt and Patrice LaFollette did "Amazing Grace". This is the favorite of Mrs. Adams' only great-grandson, Jonathon Preston. Mrs. Moore did a beautiful medley about Heaven. Mrs. Adams was a member of the Welcome Home Baptist Church, a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother and a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Elzie George Adams, of the Hudson Community; one daughter Gloria Jean (Adams) Murphy and husband Claude, also of Hudson; two brothers, John Jordan and wife Jerline, and Roy Jordan and wife Bettye, also of Hudson; two granddaughters, Victoria Murphy of Lafayette, LA and Cathy (Murphy) Preston and husband of Burlington, NC; one great grandson, Jonathon Austin Preston, also of Burlington, NC. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of forty-five years, Glenn Pine, and is survived by her two children, Don Pine of Houston, TX and Cindy Connell of Waco, TX, and five grandchildren, Stacy and Christopher Pine and Carie, Cayce and Chance Connell. A graduate of Louisiana College, she taught high school for five years in Atlanta, LA before marrying and eventually moving to Dallas. A long time member of Cliff Temple Baptist Church, she was active in the Cliffwood Study Club and the Joanna Sunday Centennial Celebration. Previously she served as Superintendent of the Young People Away Department and as Assistant Superintendent of the College Department at Cliff Temple. Marie never forgot her roots. Her Louisiana friends and relatives were important to her and she continued to support local organizations such as the Transport Cemetery Association, the Louisiana Political History Museum, and Louisiana College. Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 4 at Cliff Temple Baptist with interment following at Laurel Land Cemetery.
