Boyett Long time Winn Parish businessman Herman H. Boyett of Dodson, LA died Saturday, March 2. 2002, in Shreveport, LA, following a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 26, 1919, in the Cypress Creek community. Funeral services will be Monday, march 4, at Antioch Bibleway Church where he had been a member for over forty years and served on the church board and building committees. Services were held at 2 p.m. at the Antioch Bibleway Church with Revs. Elton Gunter, Kenneth Stanfill and Ronnie Taylor officiating. Burial was at Cypress Creek Cemetery under the direction of Rev. Raylord Higgs. A World War H Navy veteran. Mr. Boyett helped found Winn State Bank, served as parish police juror for sixteen years, owned and operated Boyett Grocery for forty-three years, and owned Boyett Land and Timber at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Opal Temple Boyett; two sons, Don H. Boyett and his wife Helen of Natchitoches, LA, and R. Chandler, Jr. of Alexandria, LA and Jeffery Lynn Chandler of Natchitoches, LA; one brother, Murry Chandler of Gansville, LA and five grandchildren.******************* Gussie Williams Ex-Pinecrest High School Coach Dies in Los Angeles by Vernon Ray Davenport, Sr., Contributing Writer From the early 1950s to the late 1960s, Gussie Williams was the head basketball, football coach and baseball coach at Pinecrest High School. Prior to his being hired at the local school, the Winn Parish native was a star athlete at Grambling college now Grambling State University. He was a pitcher who had tryout in 1950 with several major league baseball teams including the Brooklyn Dodgers. During his nearly two decades at Pinecrest, Williams led his Yellow Jackets team to more victories than any other coach in the school's history. He coached such standout athletes as Freddie D. King, Ivory Smith, Preston Powell, Jerry Robinson, Clifton Ray Valentine, John Wyatt, Oran Samuel, Odell Woods and many others. He also produced several championship teams. After leaving Pinecrest in the late 1960s, Williams coached at a high school in Los Angeles. He retired a few years ago. Williams was the son of the late Mrs. Rosanna Williams and the brother of former Pinecrest High School teacher Oscar Williams, who is currently residing in Minden.
