Nix were held at 10 a.m. Monday, November 1, 1999 in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was Dr. Calvin Phelps. Burial was in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Winnfield with full military honors. Mr. Nix, age 73 of Winnfield, died Friday, October 29, 1999 at his residence in Winnfield. He was a native of Terrell, TX, a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, a veteran of WWII and Korea. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Chief Nix was wounded by a Japanese kamikaze airplane that hit his ship during the invasion of Okinawa. While aboard the USS O'Brien, Chief Nix participated in the Atomic Bomb Text [Test] as a member of Joint Task Force One at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal (second award), Navy Expeditionary Medal (Cuba) Good Conduct Medal (fourth award) Occupation Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II, Victory Medal, and the Order of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Drone Splashers Club, The Order of The Golden Dragon, and was inducted into the Order of the Deep & Society of The Flying Dragon. Having crossed the equator at the 180th meridian on May 7,m 1947 {May 7, 1947, he became a Trusty Shellback and Flying Dragon. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Nix, of Winnfield, LA; two daughters, Cheri Spiller of Mulberry, FL and Mistye Davis of Alexandria, LA; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Nix in 1986 and David Nix in 1988.********************** Obituaries, Winn Parish Enterprise, Winnfield, Louisiana, November 10, 1999, Page 7-B Chris Chambers Christopher Daniel "Chris" Chambers, 23, of Texarkana, Texas, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999. Mr. Chambers was born Jan. 4, 1976, in Mount Pleasant, TX. He was a rancher, professional bull rider, 1996 Champion Bull Rider and member of the PRCA, CRRA and First Baptist Church, Wake Village. He was preceded in death by his father, James Otis Chambers, Jr. Survivors include one daughter, Robyn Chambers of Nash, Texas; his mother, Aline Chambers (formerly Aline Johnson) of Texarkana; two sisters, Kathy Brown of Texarkana and Vickie Steward of Longview, Texas; three brothers, Jim Chambers and John Chambers of Texarkana and Mike Chambers of Longview; two aunts and one uncle, Kathy and R.C. Austin of Winnfield, La., and Lelia Beasley of St. Rose, La.; and a number of other relatives. His grandparents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Jay Johnson. Services were held November 6, 1999 in Texarkana Funeral Home Fuqua- Everett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Seigler officiating. Burial was in Red Bayou Cemetery, New Boston, Texas.********************** Johnnie Belle Lasyone Lowery Funeral services for Johnnie Belle Lowery were held at 2 p.m., Monday, November 8, 1999 in the Union Baptist Church, Joyce, Louisiana. Officiating was Rev. Wallace Ingles. Burial followed in the Union Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Mrs. Lowery, 72, of Winnfield, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999 in the Winn Parish Medical Center. She was a Grant Parish native and a homemaker. Survivors are one son, John and his wife, Margie Lowery of Winnfield; two brothers, Elmer Lasyone and Arlon Lasyone, both of Pollock, La.; one sister, Melba Dubroc, of Pineville, La; 7 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren. Pallbearers were: Gary Spangler, Dewayne Sanders, Glenn Bandy, Robert Gorham, Bobby Lowery, Raymond Lowery, Jeff Carpenter and Clay Carpenter.********************** Thomas Joseph White Graveside services for Thomas Joseph White were held at 2 p.m., Monday in the Garden of Memories Cemetery with Reverend Huey White officiating. Burial was under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Mr. White, age 45 of Winnfield, died Sunday, November 7, 1999 at Summit Hospital in Sulphur. Survivors include: one brother, Donald L. White of Winnfield; three nieces and two nephews. Rev Glen Griffen [Griffin] will officiate. Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Cemetery. Mrs. Carpenter, age 86, of Winnfield, died Monday, November 15, 1999 in the Lincoln General Hospital. She was a homemaker and a native of Goldonna, LA. Survivors are three sons, Don Carpenter and wife Jean of Springhill, LA, Mack Carpenter and wife Kasuko of San Antonio, TX and Wayne Carpenter and wife Ginger of Jonesboro, LA; 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchildren [grandchild]. Harmon Chandler were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Winnfield, LA. Revs. Lester Carpenter and H. W. Smith officiated. Burial was in the Corinth Tabernacle Cemetery near Winnfield, LA. Mr. Chandler, 89, died Saturday in the Winn Parish Medical Center in Winnfield, LA. Mr. Chandler was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was also a Lay Minister and a native of Winnfield. Survivors include three sons, William Derrell Chandler of Lake City, FL, Marshall Chandler of Winnfield, LA and Rev. James Chandler of Great Bend, KS; one daughter Elizabeth Ann Chandler of Winnfield, LA; three brothers, Norris Boyett of Greenville Springs, LA; Rev. D. G. Boyett of Winnfield, LA and Rev. Berry A. Chandler of Hammond, LA; one sister, Maybelle Dalby of Winnfield, LA; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was a native of Winnfield and a resident of New Orleans for 55 years. Mrs. Culpepper was a retired bookkeeper from the New Orleans Law Firm of Terriberry, Rault, Young and Carroll. Mrs. Culpepper is the daughter of the late Lillie Daniels and Charles Felix. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Culpepper in 1986. She is survived by one son and a daughter-in-law, William R. Culpepper and Julia Abigail Culpepper of Bradenton, FL and one sister, Mary E. Mrs. Higgs was a member of the Hurricane Creek Baptist Church, a homemaker and a native of Winn Parish. Survivors include two sons, Rayford Higgs of Winnfield, LA and Charles Higgs of Dodson, LA; three daughters, Alpha Brewton of Dodson, LA, Cornell Gresham of Quitman, LA and Charlotte Chandler of Dodson, LA; two brothers, Herman Boyett of Dodson, LA and W. A. Boyett of Dodson, LA; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Houston G. Mrs. Brock, 51 of Calvin, LA died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999 in her residence. She was an LPN in the office of Dr. E. C. Meyers and a homemaker. Survivors are her husband R. B. Officiating will be Rev. Doyle Wesson. Burial will follow I the Garden of memories in Winnfield. Mrs. Neal, 98 of Joyce, died Sunday, Nov. 21 in the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, LA. She was a native of Oberlin, LA and a homemaker. Survivors are two daughters, Betty Neal Smith of Tioga, LA and Nelda Neal Fryar Stephens of Tioga, LA; 7 grandchilden; 13 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Friends may visit until service time Tuesday. Pallbearers are: Woody Fryar, T. Greg Smith, Jerry Smith, Ricky Smith, Larry Fryar and Mickey Carey.********************** Roy "Ben" Cox Memorial services for Roy "Ben" Cox, 62 of Lubbock were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 23, 1999 in the Chapel of Angels Funeral Home, with Rev. Jim Brown officiating. Burial was in a Military Burial at Sea, by United States Navy, off the coast of San Diego, CA. Roy died November 20, 199 [1999] in Lubbock, he was born July 8, 1937 in Tipah County, MS. He married Letha Lovell on October 29, 1959, in San Antonio. Roy spent 22 1/2 years in the United States Navy. After retiring from there he went to work at Pollard Friendly Ford in the Service Department. Survivors include his wife; Letha of Lubbock; one daughter, Kathy Huckabee of Lubbock; one son, Phillip Cox of Lubbock; three sisters, Shirley Carmichael and Thelma Green, both of Lubbock, and Dorothy C. Schexnider of Breaux Bridge, LA; three brothers, David Cox and Buster Lovell, both of Lubbock and Leroy Cox of Atlanta, LA; one granddaughter, Storm Huckabee of Lubbock; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and family. The family would like memorials to be made to the National Professional Business Woman's Scholarship Fund.
