He was born in Alexandria, LA and was a student at Winnfield Intermediate School. Survivors are his mother. He was a Winnfield native, served in the US Marines in Korea and was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church. He was a welder. Mrs. Rambin died on Sunday, November 11, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Robert Rambin Sr., her son, Melvin L. Rambin and her great granddaughter, Sydney Gordon. Mrs. Rambin was born in Goldonna, LA and graduated from Northwestern State College. She was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years. She taught in Shreveport and Monroe, LA, Jacksonville, FL and Vidalia, GA. She was a member of North Monroe Baptist Church where she attended church and Sunday school. She is survived by her son Dr. William Robert Rambin, Jr. and wife, Linda, her daughter-in-law Julia W. Rambin and her sister Mrs. Melba Bray. Col. Ashcroft, age 88, died Monday, November 12, 2001 in Beaumont, TX. He had been a resident of San Antonio since his retirement until two years ago when he moved to a retirement center in Beaumont, TX. A brief memorial service was held on Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at the retirement center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bess Ward Ashcroft. He is survived by one daughter, Sue Ashcroft Burford and her husband Don Burford of Silsbee, TX; one granddaughter, one grandson, one great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. Luke and Bess will be remembered by many friends in Winn Parish. She was born in Eros, La., a resident of Winnfield, a member of Laurel Heights Baptist Church and was a homemaker. A daughter, Lena Louise Branch and three sisters and six brothers preceded her in death. Survivors include three daughters, Verlie Leeper of Winnfield, Linnie Alice Weaver of Seagoville, TX, and Ether Lea Bridle of Statesville, NC; 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Horace Weaver, Doug Weaver, Philip Weaver, Kevin Leeper, Joe Martinez, and Clay Friedman.********************** Sherman Ford Many friends, relatives and officials gathered in the Winnfield Primary School auditorium on Monday, November 19, to bid farewell to longtime law enforcement officer Sherman Ford who died suddenly November 13, 2001. Ford had retired after working for over 20 years as a sheriffs deputy with the Winn Parish Sheriffs Office and had the distinction of being the first African-American deputy on the force. In those years, he served in various positions, including road deputy, patrolman and criminal investigator. A Mason, Ford had served as a longtime member of the Parish Democratic Executive Committee. He was also a contractor with the U.S. Postal Service. Ford was a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, superintendent and deacon for many years. He is survived by his wife Valenteen Ford; three daughters, Barbara Jewitt of Winnfield, Frances Jones of Sugar Land, Texas, and Tammye Keegan of Phoenix, Arizona; one son, Corey Harrell of Lafayette; six grandsons, one granddaughter and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Leona Thompson of Victorville, CA; one brother, Walter Abrams of Winnfield; and two sisters, Ruthie Waller of Victorville, California, and Francis Burell of Chicago, Illinois. Services included eulogistic expressions from friend Etoy Ashley, neighbor Husher Calhoun, a word of inspiration from Rev. Roy B. Williams and oration by Rev. James Leonard. Professor Davenport was born on February 2, 1911, to the Union of Mary and Robert Davenport in the Calvin community. He moved to Alabama after graduating from high school. After receiving his high school education in Winn Parish, he moved to Alabama where he graduated from college and later received a Masters Degree in education. Professor Davenport was a principal of a school in Headland, Ala., for many years. He and his wife Lillian had five children; Stanley Jr. Carolyn, Diann, Renay, and Janet. Professor Davenport is survived by one sister, Wavie D. Hollingsworth of Shreveport. He was a native of Winnfield, attended Winnfield High School. Upon graduating he served four years in the U. S. Navy and received an honorable discharge at San Diego, CA as Chief Petty officer. He lived in Jacksonville for the past 40 years working as a master electrician and senior estimator for Millennium Electric, Jacksonville. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Creel was an active member for 28 years at Oak Crest United Methodist Church. A memorial has been established in his honor for his dedication and loyalty to his church. Mr. McCarty, age 96 the Beech Creek Community, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2001 at the Winn Parish Medical Center at 7:15 a.m. "Mr. Wiston" as most people referred to him, was the last surviving member of the Famed LA Range Riders in 1936. He was born to the union of Howard and Lucy McCarty on November 26, 1904. He was at one time one of the largest cattle owners in North LA and was featured on KNOE-TV and in several newspaper articles as a model of the Old West. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Minnie McCarty, the mother of his children, and Agnes McCarty. Also, two grandsons, Jessie Lee McCarty and James Wiston Taylor and one son, Arlos McCarty. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Beryl Taylor and husband Louis of Benton, LA; one son, Howard McCarty and wife Pauline of Olla, LA; grandsons: Howard McCarty, Randy McCarty, Gary Taylor, Wiston B. Mr. Lolan, age 88 of Winnfield, LA died Tuesday, November 27, 2001 in the Winn Parish Medical Center. He was a member of the Catholic Church, was retired from Allied Chemicals in 1976. He was preceded in death by one son, John Thomas Lolan. Survivors are his wife, Elaine J. Lolan of Winnfield, LA; one son, Donald James Loan of Red Bud, IL; two daughters, Joyce Elaine Hickey of St. Louis, MI, and Terry Ann Mattalino of Houston, TX; two brothers, James E.
