Doug Allen officiating. Burial was at Mulhearn Memorial Park. Mrs. Gates died Tuesday, November 11, 2003 in Monroe. She was born August 19, 1910 in Winn Parish, LA. She was the only daughter of John Randle and Ella Puckett Mixon who resided near Dodson in Winn Parish throughout their lifetime. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Gladden Gates, formerly of Sikes, and one grandson, Murray Orion Parker. She was a 1927 graduate of Dodson High School, later attending college in Natchitoches at what is now Northwestern State University, earning BA and MA degrees as well as a Masters plus 30. Mrs. Gates was a member of College Place Baptist Church and a number of professional organizations, as well as the Chief Tusquahoma Chapter-Daughters of the American Revolution and the Palestine Chapter #55 Order of the Eastern Star. She was listed in Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America and received numerous awards for her work with 4-H clubs at Dodson High School during 23 years of service as an adult 4-H Leader. She retired in 1974 after serving more than 40 years as a teacher in the Winn Parish Public Schools. She and her husband moved to Monroe in 1977, where she taught an additional 10 years at Ridgedale Academy and Grace Episcopal School. McMurry, age 98, of Winnfield, La., died Wednesday, November 19, 2003, at her residence in Winnfield, La. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Winnfield where she was active in the W. M. U. and Keenage Choir. She was also a member of Palestine Chapter #55, Order of the Eastern Star and the Winn Home Demonstration Club. She was the daughter of the late Harvey McMaster and the late Minnie (Snyder) McMaster. Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Homes; 202 E. Lafayette St., Winnfield, La. Funeral services were at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 22, 2003. Rev. Lindsey Burns officiated. Interment was at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Winnfield, La. She was survived by one daughter, Patsy M. (McMurry) Pulley of Winnfield, LA; one grandson, Pat Pulley of Irving, TX; one granddaughter, Gayle Simmons of La Porte, TX; five great granddaughters, Laura Richards of Houston, TX, Denise Hicks of Dallas, TX, Heather Rodriguez of La Porte, TX, Danielle Rodriguez of La Porte, TX, and Shelby Pulley of Fort Myers, FL; one great grandson, Sam Pulley of Austin, TX; and one very dear friend, Peggy Jordan of Winnfield, LA. Ashley, age 80, of Winnfield, LA, died Friday, November 21, 2003, at Parkview Nursing Home in Winnfield, LA. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was the son of the late Thomas Ashley and the late Vera (Howard) Ashley. Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home, Winnfield, LA. Funeral services were held at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2003. Reverend Author Robinson officiated. Interment was held at Sanders Chapel Cemetery in Calvin, La. He is survived by his wife Irine (Franks) Ashley; one daughter, Connie Ashley of Winnfield, LA; five sons, Alvin Ashley of Winnfield, LA, Eddie Ashley of Dodson, LA, Woody Ashley of Atlanta, LA, Pat Ashley of Dodson, LA, and Chris Ashley of Winnfield, LA; one sister, Vernon Burlow of Winnsboro, LA; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
