U.SM.C., Retired PRINCETON, LA. Captain Thomas Julian Shaw, USMC, Retired, age 89, entered eternal rest on Wednesday June 1, 2005. Graveside services, with full military honors conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps, were held on Friday June 3, 2005, at Hill Crest Memorial Park Cemetery at 601 Hwy 80 East, in Haughton, La. Officiating were Rev. Gevan Spinney of First Baptist Church of Haughton. Visitation was held on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home. Thomas J. Shaw, the second of six children, was born on September 22, 1915 to Henry Isaiah Shaw and Bertha Annie Rodgers Shaw at home near Calvin, La. After graduating from Calvin High School in 1932, he entered the United States Marine Corps in 1933. During his 21-year career, Captain Shaw became a pilot and photographer and was stationed at numerous bases including the Special Service Squadron (Banana Fleet) in the Caribbean Sea, Midway Island, Washington, D.C., the Pacific Islands during WWII China. Japan, Korea, and Cherry Island, N.C. While stationed in China his plane was forced down, and he was captured and held captive by communist Chinese forces. After his release, he returned to the states and on August 25, 1950 in Conway, S.C. he married Grace Mizell in 1955 at Cherry Point, N.C. he retired from the United States Marine Corps and returned to his native Louisiana. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, gardening, history, family gatherings and was a gifted storyteller. As a devoted, loving husband and father, his family always came first. His patience and knowledge were endless and his guidance through life's crises, gentle. His father Henry Isaiah Shaw, mother Bertha Annie Rodgers Shaw, brothers Conley Lee Shaw, and Henry Wayne Shaw, sisters Edna Mae Shaw Bradford and Avis Mavon Shaw preceded Mr. Shaw in death. Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Grace Mizell Shaw of Princeton, La: one son, Richard D. Shaw and wife Carol of Princeton, La; one daughter, Susan S. Schaffer and husband Anthony of Alexander, AR.: four grandchildren, David M. Shaw and wife Terrie of Haughton, LA: Wendy S. Lowery and husband Robert of Ocean Springs, MS; Jennifer S. Crawford and husband Ronnie of Elm Grove, La; Nicholas A. Shurtlieff of Alexandria, AR; three step grandchildren, Annie W. Wilson and husband Randy of Haughton, LA; Kristopher B. Mr. Gates was born in Winnfield, Louisiana and lived in Cobb County, GA since 1970. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Gates earned his Masters and Undergraduate degree at the Louisiana College where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and served as Dean of Students. He retired from Mercer University as a Professor of History. Mr. Gates was a member of the Southern Historical Society and the First Baptist Church of Marietta, GA. He was an avid gardener. Born January 6, 1913 in Calvin, Louisiana to John Thomas Bice and Elizabeth Carolyn Brett, she grew up and lived her entire life in Winn Parish, Louisiana. She graduated from Calvin High School and Meadows Draughn Business College in Shreveport and succeeded her father as Postmaster in Calvin, a position she held for many years. Annie Lee married Luther Keaton in 1955 and the two of them lived a full and happy life in Winnfield until his death in 1992. Annie Lee and Luther were active members of First Baptist Church, each teaching Sunday School classes and participating freely in other activities of the church. She was employed for many years by Central Power and Light Company (now Atmos Energy) in Winnfield. She was preceded in death by: her parents, three sisters, Alma Bice Jackson, Pearl Bice Rikard, Belva Bice McLemore and three brothers, Buford Thomas Bice, Arlin Thomas Bice and James Garlin Bice. Mrs. Fleniken was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield and was retired from the Dept of Health and Human Resources. She was a state auditor and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Keenagers of First Baptist Church, andthe Daughters of the American Revolution. Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2005 at the Kansas Veteran's Home in Winfield, Kansas. Preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen (Temple) Burkhart. He was a member of the 100th Bomb Group during World War II. During his tour of duty during World War II, he was shot down and spent some time as a Prisoner of War. Following World War II, he answered the call to service again and went on to serve in the Korean Conflict.
