Martin Timber Co. and a native of Ajax, LA. Mrs. Tate was born May 14, 1931 at Harrisburg, AR, the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Mary Ann Dodson Chatman. She received her education in the schools of Harrisburg, AR and on June 10, 1953 was married at Tyronza, AR to Allen Tate. Mrs. Tate and her family made their home in the Harrisburg, AR area until 1970 when they moved to West Plains. Mrs. Tate enjoyed giving her time volunteering at the local nursing homes and at Birthright. Also, she made blankets and layettes for newborns at Ozarks Medical Center. She was born 92 years and [and] 22 days ago in Catahoula Parish, La. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Manuel Long and brothers, Willard White Smith and Samuel Norwood Smith, and her father, Samuel Norris Smith and her mother Mary Elizabeth Hamilton Smith. She was a homemaker and former Sunday School teacher at Corinth Baptist Church where she had been a member for many, many years. She lived most of the past 72 years in a split log house built in the year 1879 for Jim Daulby Long, grandfather of George Manuel Long. In 1923 the house was taken apart and each log numbered and moved by ox wagon from its original homestead to its present location. Oh, how Mrs. Esther loved that log house. Even though she does not leave behind any children to mourn her passing, she leaves tnieces [nieces] and nephews and a host of friends and loved ones. Officiating was Dr. Calvin Phelps. Burial followed in the Jordan Hill Cemetery in Winnfield under the direction of Southern. Mrs. Hammett, age 75 of Winnfield, passed away at 9:50 p.m. Friday, September 24, 1999 at Rapides Medical Center in Alexandria, LA. She was a native of Winn Parish and a retired church secretary. Mrs. Hammett is survived by her husband, Lloyd Myron Hammett, of Winnfield, LA, a son, Thomas Myron Hammett and a daughter, Joan H. Clifford, both of Arlington, TX; and a brother Dennis Eugene Rosier, of Jordan Hill, LA.
