Davis was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed about four hours after the tragedy. City Marshall Gamble Carter reported that he was called to the scene in the addition to the L. & A. Negro quarters, south of Winnfield, and found the suspect, Mattie Lee Boyd lying across a bed sobbing. A complete search of the house followed and a small paring knife with a short blade and a broken handle was found, which is believed to be the death weapon. Also found in the house was pan of partially cut beets and belief that the girl was preparing beets for canning when she and Davis became involved in an argument. This evidently led to the fatal stabbing. It is reported that the girl confessed to the crime and was taken to the city jail by the marshal, where she was held Wednesday night, and transferred to the parish jail Thursday morning by Deputy Troy Kyson. No charges have been filed and the suspect is being held in jail awaiting the outcome of the coroner's inquest, to be held in the immediate future. No motive for the crime was revealed. The crime was investigated Thursday morning by the Winn Parish Sheriff's force.
