Mrs. Maude Shell Dean, 83, of Winnfield died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, August 30, 1970 in Winnfield General Hospital. The deceased was the widow of the late E. J. Dean, a native of Georgia and a member of the First Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Edward J. Dean of Baton Rouge; three daughters, Mrs. Sye Varnell and Mrs. Ranel Brady, Jr., both of Winnfield, and Mrs. H. W. Awalt of Beeville, Texas; three brothers, Sam Shell of Chatham, Waymon Shell of Columbia, and Beverly Shell of Cotton Valley; three sisters, Mrs. Mattie Calton of Columbia, Mrs. Annie Fookes of Alexandria, and Mrs. Avis Hatten of Monroe; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the First United Methodist Church in Winnfield, Rev. James Skinner officiating. Burial was in Winnfield cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Pallbearers were C. C. Carter, J. J. Crippen, Dr. Jack Evans, Bluch Haddox, Dennis Shell, Kidd Farr, Elton Nash, P. K. Smith.
