All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: June 3, 1948 Winn Parish Enterprise Joe Dodson, 83, Colored Yard Man Succumbs Sunday Joe Dodson, 83, colored yard man for numerous Winnfield citizens for many years, except during the cotton picking season, died at his home in the McMurdo Quarters Sunday. An employee of the L & A Railway for 33 years, he retired on a pension in 1935 and devoted his time to yard work except during the cotton picking season when he would tell his white friends that he couldn't work for them "because there's nothing I like better than rairoadin' and pickin' cotton." Joe was married to Mat Jones who washed for many Winnfield families previous to the day of the automatic washing machines. She survives him with a number of daughters. Funeral services were held Tuesday with burial in the Union Cemetery.
