Dow Civil War Veteran Dies Charles Clinton Dow, 81 years old, died at his home here at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon, May 11. Services were held by Masonic Lodge at 3:15 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Winnfield Cemetery at 4 o'clock. Mr. Dow was born in Pennsylvania on April 15, 1841. When he was 14 years old he came South and spent the later part of his boyhood and earlier manhood in Arkansas. He joined the Northern army in 1861 and served during the war as a soldier on the frontier in Colorado. Mr. Dow was twice married. Three children were born from the first marriage, two boys and one girl. The daughter, Mrs. Mary Bishop, Cleaborn, Tex., survives her father. Miss Frances Westbrook and Mr. Dow were married in McNeil, Ark., in 1883. Eight children, six girls and two boys, were born from the second marriage. Those who survive him from this second marriage are: One daughter, Mrs. A. J. Cope, one son, F. A. Dow, and his wife, Mrs. Frances Dow. In 1899 Mr. Dow and his family moved to Bernice, where they remained 14 years. During this time he was postmaster for six years. In 1913 he moved to Winnfield and bought out J. W. Honeycutt's Grocer Store, which he ran about 1 « years. Bad health caused Mr. Dow to retire from business shortly after this. Mr. Dow has been in ill health since December 1, 1921. He attended the Old Soldiers' Reunion here May 6, becoming ill on Sunday afterwards. He has been a member of the Masons for fifty years and a member of the Eastern Star for thirty years. He was a loyal member and a great lover of his lodges. It has been said by the many friends of Mr. Dow that he was a faithful friend, loyal to his friends and his family. Mr. Dow was loved and esteemed by all who knew him.
