All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: December 4, 1958 Winn Parish Enterprise News-American Mrs. Evie Mercer Duncan Dies From Burns At Pollock A 53 year old Pollock woman died at 5:20 p.m. Saturday in an Alexandria hospital from burns sustained when her clothing caught on fire earlier in the day. She was Mrs. Evie Mercer Duncan. It was reported that Mrs. Duncan had gone into her yard to do her morning chores and returned to the house to "warm up" in front of the fireplace. Somehow her clothing caught fire. She managed to put out the flames, put on her coat, and walk about 200 yards to the home of a sister, Mrs. V. E. Waters. She was then rushed to the Baptist Hospital where she died. Survivors include three other sisters, Mrs. J. J. Bruce of Bentley, Mrs. Eugene Smith of Bossier City, and Mrs. Houston Crawford of Shreveport; four brothers, Rev. Moses Mercer, Harry Mercer, Jesse Mercer, all of Pollock, and W. F. Mercer of Winnfield. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday from the Big Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Houston Smith and Rev. Curtis Ellis officiating. Interment, under direction of Hixson Funeral Home, followed in the Big Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were A. L. Parker, Melvin Eubanks, Kelly Eubanks, Jr., Ray Bruce, Rudolph Waters, and Alva Coleman.
